Also, the Sox are one of the richest franchises in baseball. Nobody wants to hear them cry poverty after the money they gave Price, Sale and Eovaldi.
Agree- when a franchise like Boston "can't afford" to keep their best player, a homegrown talent and MVP caliber performer at 27 (all season) they've really screwed up something badly in the accounting department.
Id be pretty pissed If I were a fan.

Mike Trout took a $100+ million discount compared to what he would've received in free agency so it's a poor comparison. Also, over the last 4 seasons he's ahead of Mookie by about 4 fWAR and only about 2 bWAR

Mookie's initial ask in free agency will be higher if he's trying to actually do meet in the middle negotiating. While 1.5 years older when entering free agency, he is a FAR better player than either Machado or Harper. Those two also had only two teams seriously bidding for their services. Mookie will have triple the number of teams putting in serious offers which could easily spike the end contract over $400 million. He's the best free agent to hit the open market in over a decade.

I think it's very likely the Red Sox will wind up bidding for him in free agency. Their big issue was getting under the tax this season to reset the repeater penalty, not necessarily to stay under the tax going forward. If they can dump the Price contract as well, there's no reason for them not to go after Mookie if he's willing to sign in Boston after being traded

I heard Alex Verdugo is kind of like a Johnny Damon free spirit and would be fun. Also is a great pure hitter and a canon for a arm. So all might not be lost if Betts get traded.

What time is kickoff tonight?
The trade will be announced 30 minutes before.

I think every team will be in on Mookie, even teams with pretty solid outfields already. He's similar to Trout in you know what you are getting with him and all you are looking for is the talent upgrade. If the Yanks made a play in FA for Betts I honestly wouldn't be surprised at all. I think Boston will wish they gave him the deal he asks for when they see the deal he finally gets.

Yankees will definitely be interested after 2020. Do we realistically believe that Judge and/or Stanton won't miss huge chunks of the season due to injury?

Picked this bad boy up at a show this morning for $75. While I PC Red Sox, I’m definitely going to flip it as I’m not much of a graded RC collector. The consensus seems to be it may go up again soon if he does get traded to the Dodgers?

Gammons -

“Boston return apparently also nearly finalized, as outfielder Alex Verdugo, lefty pitcher Caleb Ferguson, top infield prospect Jeter Downs, and one other low-level prospect will become Red Sox players in a Betts deal.”

well as an owner of a mookie betts '14 heritage red auto rookie, i'm relieved he's going to the dodgers and not the padres.

yeah it stinks but we have 4 world series titles since 2004. It stinks to see Mookie go but I don't really thing he wanted to be in Boston. He was going to FA unless we gave him a Trout contract and obviously that wasn't going to happen.

Heard Jeter Downs is a stud. Has Gleyber Torres ceiling.

PLUS none of those 10 year contracts are ever worth it. They were going to be a wild card team at best this year with Mookie. I am just punting the 2020 Red Sox season. Load up for 2021.

Wish Mookie well. Will make my decision to sell on him easier. Cheers to an MVP caliber 2020 season $$$.

Is the return for Mookie worth it or does Boston just want to get rid of the guy?

If it`s Alex Verdugo and Jeter Downs the Red Sox did good for a one year rental. Verdugo goes to rightfield and Jeter Downs would be their starting 2b next year.
I am just hoping David Price is in on the deal.

I'm not in any way a Sox fan complete opposite . But it's ridiculous if he leaves the Sox. I wish these players were more loyal to the organization that made them into the players they have become.

Mookie is a top 5 AL candidate but he has been invisible in the Post Season. If I had to choose between having a Mookie Betts or a David Ortiz, I would choose Ortiz every time. It's not that Betts isn't a great player, I just believe Ortiz has that "IT" factor in the Post Season.

Padres might still be in this to raise the Dodgers price higher?
