Reports are coming out saying the son was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. They said a new medication he was taking may be to blame. Thats even more tragic. Explains the years of uncontrollable drug addiction. He was self medication but ultimately making things worse.

Twitter isn't a news source. Twitter providers a platform for news sources. It allows us to read various viewpoints and select the ones we think are most and least reliable. Also, great link to Reuters. Do you fully trust everything Reuters puts out there? Do you know Reuters has a policy of not using "terrorism" or "terrorist" in its stories? Appreciate the schooling on which media sources to consume and not consume.

Never lose sight of the mountain when your MSM tosses a molehill in front you. It's mentally weak, which they need to change the narrative. Never be a victim of MSM.

Just lost a friend to this. Dude was at least able to manage it. Then they prescribed him pills and that was the end. I hate big pharma like most.

Yeah, its very sad. A lot of the folks I worked with during my street outreach days had untreated schizophrenia. One guy will not go in any building other than the public library. One of the women kept thinking she was being sexially assaulted over and over again. I think when they introduce new drugs like this, it should always be monitored in an inpatient setting. I am sorry to hear about your friend.

How much are you donating to help fund an inpatient psych bed shortage that probably approaches 100k across the country?

People act horrified when you say it, but state run asylums must return. Mental illness is a horrible disease, and nobody is doing anything to help. Virtue signaling liberals try to claim moral superiority because they support these people having a shelter to stay in or living in tents on the street. Money isn’t the primary problem driving homelessness. It’s mental health and/or substance abuse. Neither of which is solved by giving someone a room or a space to park their tent.

None because the funds wouldn't be allocated properly. I will do more meaningful things.

I agree that we need a return of State run mental health hospitals but they need to be run much much better. Some folks are not able to function outside of a supportive environment. Group homes have years long waiting lists and are not always the right setting. Money is the primary problem driving every single issue we have in this country. Poverty should not exist in the greatest country on Earth. To your point though, Yes, that is a huge issue but it is not the only issue. We are seeing a huge rise in senior citizens and transitional aged youth (16-25) who are being displaced from their homes. Shelter spaces are actually very traumatizing. Especially if you have mobility issues and you have to get up off the ground because most utilize boats. They also don't allow you any place to go during the day nor can you typically keep your things there. It only addresses one very minor part of the problem. They are necessary though especially in places that have harsher weather.

We recently put my mom in assisted living and those facilities were hit hard with staffing issues post-Covid. I’m not sure where we would get the staffing for new State-run mental institutions, as that is likely a tougher job than serving the elderly (which … don’t get me wrong … is a tough job). It’s a high stress, high turnover job.

They also typically don't pay well. The existing spaces would need a lot of work, too, to get up to modern code compliance.

Nailed it.

That is why I earlier said we need more psychologists and less psychiatrists. But it's quicker/cheaper for big pharma to have psychiatrists prescribe an anti-psychotic and tell the patient they'll see them in X months.

How do you fund all of this? I'll start with a crazy concept. Stop some insane fraud that is going on and actually have money make it's way to the intended audiences. We need more auditing, and severe penalties, in our country. And the fraud occurs in "welcoming" states (e.g., Minnesota and California) and via "charitable" programs (e.g., homelessness, autism, hunger, COVID relief programs). It's a reminder that empathy is great... but with boundaries. Where there aren't boundaries, empathy is targeted and exploited.

To the poster that lost his friend, I'm sorry to read that. Mental illness is incredibly sad. Most folks don't choose it... it chooses them. Sadly, you do occasionally have some folks that make repeated horrible decisions that lead to mental illness.

As the next poster said, it doesn't pay well either. A long time ago, I was in that environment as an intern. I worked with adolescent males. One was a cutter and would bite himself in group therapy. I would stop him and he'd kiss his arm and stroke it with his other hand while saying "good baby... good baby." Another young kiddo (12 maybe?) was so sweet... I found him hiding in his closet and he came out saying he saw blue faces. Heartbreaking. Another was found eating glass on the playground. While most were in and out of inpatient in 3-5 days, he was there the whole time. He was numb to the "calming" shots given and would let you know that. I was told to watch him once while he was in the padded room and he told me he would hang his head against the glass door if I didn't go get a nurse. So I went, they told me he wouldn't, he did, cracked his forehead open and smeared his blood on the glass and told me "I told you so." The nurses came after that.

That was 24 years ago. I'll never forget those few months. And these health professionals work with these folks for decades, take it home, and some are able to cope with it. Nothing but respect.
