Brady played until he was 45.

I really hope you didn’t just compare Philip Rivers to Tom Brady.

Why not? Both were really good QB’s in the aughts.

I rewatched the 2007 AFCCG the other night. Hell of a performance by a wounded Rivers.

Your comparison was fair. Don't listen to him. Brady was just one of a number of 40+ year old QBs you could have named from over the past 5 years

Aaron Rodgers is 42. Flacco is over 40. They are playing right now. Drew Brees would count too.

Matt Stafford might be playing in the Super Bowl at 38 if the Rams make it. Thats a 38 year old QB who should win the MVP.

Age is only a number for some people. Its not like a 44 year old running back looking for a comeback.

Yeah, we've seen what Emmitt Smith looks like in a PepsiCo commercial.

Aaron is clearly at the end. Flacco is a grizzled vet backup option only.

38 is not 44.

But most importantly, these other guys have played consistently without time off, keeping mind sharp and body in playing shape.

Rivers retired in... 2020 (or Jan 2021, technically)? It's 2025.

I don't see this going well.

I never said it was going to turn out well. I said it wasn't unheard of, and brought receipts.

I think it would be hilarious! This will either be awesome or a train wreak. I am here for it either way!

Rivers only needs 649 passing yards to overtake Big Ben for #6 all time.

Stafford only needs 278 to overtake Rivers for #7 All time. Stafford is also just 9 TD away from Rivers 6th place. So Rivers can put a little distance in the career stats sheet here if it works out well. At least for one more season.

Rivers never had much of an arm - even in his prime. It isn't possible to defeat time and come back with a stronger arm five years later. Won't be many safeties deep against him...

Jonathan Taylor gonna need to put the offense on his back. If Rivers can just be a game manager and not make many mistakes, Colts should still be able to compete in most games. But if they get down early, opposing teams will load the box to shut down Taylor and force Rivers to throw, which may get ugly quick.

As a Denver fan I wouldn’t love it but it would be a really cool story if Rivers came back and led them to a wildcard berth and took them to the Super Bowl.

Thats just silly. He could wing it with the best of em. Lets not make it seem like he was Captain Checkdown or something.

From 2008-2020, he tossed for over 4,000 yards every single season except one. 2012 he has 3606. 5 of those, he had over 4,500 yards.

I would never call a QB that tossed 64,000 yards in the NFL weak armed. Not elite arm strength. But he certainly had "an arm"

I'm not saying he wasn't a good quarterback - but he did NOT have a big arm, especially at the tail end of his career. He succeeded through his brain and a quick release - that's how he piled up so many yards and was a starter for as long as he was. While it helps to be able to make "all the throws", you can succeed if you can't through other means. If Rivers starts this year, at age 44, he will have the weakest or among the weakest throwing arms in the NFL. That really shouldn't even be a debate. A portion of the playbook will be tossed aside if Rivers is starting.

Most definitely. They have - rightfully so - game planned around Taylor as the centerpiece. I do think they'll get creative with Rivers getting the ball to Taylor in space...and Tyler Warren should see a ton of looks. The Colts are good enough to stay in most/every game if Rivers has something left in the tank, but they won't have much of a deep ball dimension to the offense...

You didn't say he didn't have a big arm. You said he didn't have an arm, implying it was weak.

Like I said, Rivers never had elite arm strength. But it was anything but weak. I do agree, his 44 year old arm is probably shot. I see Rodgers struggling with the deep ball now. And he was Queen of the Hail Mary.

Yes, other QBs have played into their 40s, but they didn’t take 4 year breaks and come back.

I think it’s wild, but worth a shot for the Colts. What’s the worst thing that could happen? Lose out and not make the playoffs? Good chance of that happening anyway.

I think Rivers was average at best. And now he's had a 5 year layoff and is QB OLD MAN age.

He's gonna regret it when he's getting hammered by the Texans D to end the season

The final 4 games of the season, teams have a current record of 36-16.

While we all kind of expect this to go bad, if he was able to pull this out and get the Colts to the SB, there would be a movie made about this.

Default Philip Rivers announces his retirement

This is something unprecedented, and crazy. The league needs the narrative with how boring everything else in the league has been in general. Let’s be honest.

Didn’t he sign a one day contact to retire with San Diego?

This also resets his HOF clock.

Only if he gets signed to the active roster.

If he makes it to the active roster it might hurt his HOF chances. He was borderline as it is and having to wait longer only hurts him probably.

And if takes the field and plays QB like Garo Yepremian in Super Bowl VII it will definitely hurt his chances.

I love a good story, but hard to imagine it outside of Hollywood here.
