This warmed my heart a bit this morning (from a Players Tribune story by Lars Nootbaar, 2023)…
“And then, along with everything else, as if that stuff wasn’t enough … there was Shohei. Look, I know you’ve read and heard a lot about Shohei by this point. You’ve seen him play. You know what he can do. You get it. I get it. But I’m here to tell you that Shohei Ohtani is an even better person than he is a baseball player. And I’ve never met anyone who is as comfortable in his own skin as Shohei. None of it is a show, either. You can absolutely tell. The first time I met him I was in the clubhouse, feeling a bit on my own — didn’t know anyone, didn’t speak the language, nerves all over the place. I’m fumbling around trying to put stuff away in my locker, and I turn around and … Shohei and Ippei are standing there looking at me. And I’m not too proud to say that I was starstruck right then. But Shohei, he just gives me this huge smile, and, in English, he says: “Hey, Lars. How’s your family?” It immediately put me at ease. And all throughout the tournament, he was just one of the boys. In Japan, age and respect are everything. But with Shohei, even though he was a little older than some of the players on that team, he was always telling us: “Treat me like I’m the same age as you! Talk to me as an equal!” He was always wanting to just be one of the guys. So to be that talented, and then, at the same time, that humble and kind? It really was inspiring to me. I can’t say enough good things about him. And now, I’m so proud to call him my friend.” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

How is everything feeling/adjusting to the new market pricing on Ohtani cards...especially 2018 RC cards? To be honest I am having trouble figuring out if this is a euphoric market moment or just the new reality.
Anyone have any thoughts/strategy? If the Dodgers lose the world series do you think prices fall...at least a little?

Only buy high end. There is no way low-med is being bought without debt (credit cards). When prices stop rising and reality hits, those same cards will end up back on eBay. The end of month credit card statement is a sobering check.

Do anyone expect some sort of regression in terms of Sho's performance on the field? Is he one of the few, the only, player that most believe will continue to get better overall performance wise?
If so, any pullback in value will only be short lived the rest of this year. People were hoping last winter to snag some deals in the off season...but were there much of that happening? Yes...it's pretty crazy seeing 2018s base 10s like Topps 700 and Bowman #49 reaching 3 bills with pop data showing 10k+ and 13k+ respectively, along with Bowman Chrome #1 at 4.8k PSA 10s and now over $3k sold prices, at some point there will be some pull back due to the high supply available. Those base 10s aren't touched by most for the smart folks here on BO for sure...but there are less smart folks, a lot of them, out there jumping on the base 10s because the better cards are way out of their reach...so they are gladly paying seemingly crazy prices for base 10s just to have a piece of Sho in a 10 slab. There are new Sho fans sprouting up with each big hit and strikeout pitch thrown. Having said that, 2018 raw will rise in price much slower than graded as folks will buy the graded first, until their budget forces them to go with raw. So 2018 raw will rise in value much slower....for the low/mid end non-numbered cards. Last edited by oddstuff; 10-26-2025 at 08:06 PM. |

No upside to buying now unless it's a rare high end card that doesn't pop up. Wait it out until at least the off-season.

There was definitely opportunities to buy at the beginning of last season. People are a fickle bunch. As soon as baseball is out of the mainstream people lose interest, and move on to the next shiny thing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You guys realize that everyone and their mom is waiting for the "off-season" right? There will be a 2-3 week slower window from the holidays and travel. That's it. Then WBC and spring training. If you want it, it's rare, and you can afford it, buy it.

What's the thoughts on the 2019 Gallery auto PSA 9 that is getting ready to end? I thought about bidding but even with how bad I have wanted an Ohtani auto I couldn't bring myself to do it with the Gallery card

Currently, any color, non-auto is too steep imo right now. However, at this point, any on-card, licensed, auto below 3k that's a reasonable grade or looks reasonably well is an automatic snatch up. At least it is for me.
