Did it generate buzz outside of the core MLB fanbase, though? Like, your casual Baseball fan doesn't know who he is nor will they tune in to potentially see him pitch (maybe) 1 inning.

This goes back to my point an All-Star game shouldn't be just a 'who had the best 3 months to start the season' exhibition, but if you're putting a guy like Misiorowski in, how do you not find a way to get Mike Trout, Juan Soto etc in the game? How is Justin Verlander not a legends pick like Kershaw? If we don't actually care entirely about the numbers, let's get the biggest stars to the game.

The audience for this is just the core MLB fanbase and they don't care either.

Honest question - is it possible him to pitch in the AS game, miss the rest of the season (injury of whatever), retain rookie status, and still be eligible for ROY next year?

If so, and he wins ROY the season after playing in the AS game… that would be weird, right?

Right, that's kinda my point though. If MLB's real goal was to generate buzz, you would generate more buzz getting all the real stars to the game. Do I think Misiorowski should be at the game? No. Do I think the Phillies/their fans are dumb for crying? Yea, because Sanchez would've been added to the game if he could pitch, but he can't.

When you get to the point of putting guys like David Peterson into the ASG though, who even cares? He's having a nice season but All-Star? Nope.

The problem is for a lot of guys like Peterson is a huge honor and they get bonuses out of it which mean a lot to them, but nobody watching cares. The HR derby was too long, the asg is fine for like the first 3 innings and that's about it.

I was looking at who is in the HR derby and uhhhhhh has this become as bad as the slam dunk contest? Talk about no buzz. Maybe they should go back to 1 rd and then we can have Judge, Ohtani, and actual stars in it.

The NBA only wishes they had the caliber of Raleigh and Wood in their dunk contest. It's not a great crew, but the NBA dunk contest is generally guys at the end of the bench/g-league. Wood is a budding star, Cal might be AL MVP, Buxton/Olson/Jazz very notable names. Caminero is a rising star who was the #1 prospect in the league.

I think the field is pretty solid, but I’ve actually wanted them to have only 1 rd for a long time now to attract more stars. Just have 16 guys go all out for 1 rd, highest total wins.

Google AI is worthless. It gave me this gem "Yes, it's possible for an MLB player to play in an All-Star game the year before winning Rookie of the Year. A recent example is Paul Skenes, who pitched in the 2024 All-Star game in Arlington and is a strong contender for the 2025 Rookie of the Year award, according to MLB.com. He even started the 2024 game as a rookie pitcher. "

Then a deeper dive it said it has never happened.

But just like earlier posts, these guys are only known by people who are already mlb's core audience.

1rd with Judge, Ohtani, Acuna, Alonso, etc that would be worth watching.

I actually think Jazz may be more of a mainstream name (he's probably the most recognizable out of the group to a casual). I think if you supplemented your biggest stars with Cal and Wood that would be most effective though, so you're right on that.

I think the All-Star game/HR Derby is specifically an event for the MLB's core audience. It's a thank you to the core fanbase. I don't think it's as much about trying to reach a broader audience as many do.

What? MLB's core audience watches ESPN and Fox. You are talking about core fans for all 30 teams. That audience is large. Even single games between 2 teams in the regular season get ESPN and Fox broadcast every week.

What does this Buxton Super RC end at tonight if he pulls it off? It's like the seller has a bet on the Derby lol

Does the Derby have that much sway on card values? I don’t think Pete saw much of a bump during his time as Champ. I guess he’s hoping on a drunk fan placing a “YOLO” bid? I guess it’s possible.

If we’re playing The Price is Right rules, I’ll say it ends at $2,999.

Josh Hamilton is probably the only real instance if you recall the insanity that happened when he participated. (though his prices went bananas without even winning)

I think a strong Derby performance could bump up card values for some of the younger guys (James Wood, Junior Caminero, and maybe even O’Neil Cruz), especially since they’re on small market teams and it could boost their national profile a lot. But not for old guys like Buxton, Olson, etc.
