Doesn't move the needle much. But it is a step in the right direction, I suppose. I'm not even sure I currently place Orlando above Detroit in the EC pecking order. Especially since they'll be getting Ivey back.

So many don't seem to understand basketball is a business. It's entertainment. There is more than just winning and losing. The NBA was so much better off when they focused on putting out the best possible product for the entire season.

Why would the Magic want Ja? Let's say for arguments sake he isn't a good fit with the Magic. I think he would be but let's say he's not. He brings star power, he would bring viewership, ticket sales, merch sales, and all those intangibles. That's in addition to making them a viable Contender. All things Desmond Bane won't do. Just like all things Mikal Bridges didn't do for the Knicks.

There is no sport where guys getting around the same amount of money per year actual value to the team and city is more lobsided than the NBA. Curry or Lebron there was no amount of money realistically that you could pay them that the team would lose on that deal. How much more is Lebron, Luka, or Curry worth to a team and a city getting paid around the same amount of money as guys like Jaylen Brown, Bradley Beal (before being terrible), Zach Lavine, Paul George and guys like that getting top salaries? Hell, in the mid 2010s outside of the top few other players Lebron and Curry's actual value was countless multiples higher than guys getting around the same amount of money as them.

What cracked me up a bunch earlier this year was people saying oh the Mavericks can still win the Luka trade. If Luka just stays par for the course before getting Flagg Mavericks had 0% chance of winning that trade. Why is that? Because of all the things Luka brings to a team and a city that doesn't even involve the team winning a championship. Mavericks would have to win minimum 2 more championships than the Lakers with AD vs Luka to win that trade. It would actually probably have to be at least 2 more and Luka wins 0 titles his entire time in LA.

Ja does not/would not make them a contender.

He's a career 31% from 3. One of the worst perimeter 1's in the league.

Orlando NEEDS shooters, not more brick layers/paint meanderers.

You're a wax guy, so understandable.

The biggest issue for Orlando is if Dominican Cwebb and Vaugnur can coexist as primary driving forces of a championship roster. Because neither of them are great shooters. Basically the polar opposite of a healthy JB/Tatum frontcourt.

They also need to revise that playbook. Because playing at the slowest pace and allowing 100 points only works if you yourself score more than 100.
I wanted them to keep Fultz.

Instead they doubled down and went to Suggs at the PG and rolled the dice. This team has no PG. It's whomever gets the ball dribble that crap up and try to make it work.

So you're saying they traded KCP and 5 firsts, plus Cole, for a guy who could be KCP 2.0.
We're on the same page there.

Trade is meh.

I don't trust Lando, especially after what he did to Solo.

If they win one title with AD and/or whatever they get from the deal, they win the deal. Titles are what matter, and nobody would say "they still lost the deal" in the middle of a parade. The Lakers aren't competing for a title with that roster, so there's no reason to believe Luka's going to get one any time soon.

It's 4 plus a pick swap FWIW although I agree with your conclusion.

When did KCP ever average 19/6/5 on 48% shooting and 41% 3pt shooting?
Other than the Phoenix 2026 pick, which will prob be a lottery pick, they will all be picks in the 20-30 range. Magic have the youth. They don’t need more late 1st rounders in the next 4-5 years.

Seems like an overpay to me simply for the fact that I don't think Bane moves the needle much at all. He's really streaky and seems to be off more often than not. Just not a trade I would have made.

A for the Grizzlies… because they aren’t good enough to win anything
B for the Magic (which is still good)

The East is wide open. The Magic are going to be really good. If the Magic picks are high? They probably have bigger issues (injuries) than this trade

This isn’t the NFL. I know the NBA wants to be but no one cares about picks 20+

Yes some hit… including Bane

That’s just not how the NBA operates anymore. You can just buy a first rounder if you want one

Half of this thread will be asleep before the first round ends next week

Finally someone that gets it
The Magic are done developing young talent for now, and that’s all these picks will amount to. We have Black and Tristan to still develop. Most of this team are 25 and under as is.

I don't think people care that they gave up the picks... It's more that they were given up for Bane. He just isn't that good.

Unfortunately neither Suggs or Fultz are good enough to solve their perimeter woes, either. Cuz they're both terrible.

This all boils down to Orlando going all in on a defensive mindset, now leaving them with a crippled team unable to keep up with modern nba offenses. Not a single starter on their roster shot at a clip that satisfied moneyball analytics. Celtics basically left Paolo and Franz wide open and dared them to keep pace. I will say Banchero did raise his level of play though.

Not sure what's up with Franz, either. The massive regression he's experienced from deep these past 2 years is headscratching. Cumulative injuries? He shouldn't be that bad, but he is.

Bane is kind of a step in the right direction, but you still have 4 other pieces that need to make massive strides as shooters to make them formidable against even the mid tier playoff squads. Feels like a massive experiment to see whether a 90's squad could legitimately compete in 2025.

I think late firsts are way undervalued. The way this cap is working, good teams have to constantly reshuffle their role players. And having as many cracks as you can get establishing some kind of youth pipeline is the savvy way to do it. Orlando is close, this deal makes them better but they gave themselves an awfully tight window to make some noise, you simply can't pay everyone. But I get it, I'm a Suns fan, having a great team once a decade followed by putrid is better than being average for decades on end.

I think the point is that he's not four 1sts and pick-swap "good". Which a case could be made for. Bane has good counting stats, and he fills a need for the Magic. But both things can be true. Teams overpay for players they may need all the time.

That's exactly what I said actually, but continue your delusion. Of course Bane is a fine player, but I think it's crazy to give up 4 1sts and a pick swap for a guy that will never even be an all-star.

#3 on a multi-year contender and it’ll be more than worth the haul of picks sent to Memphis.

Like to see teams like Orlando makes these types of moves. They’ll be a fun league pass watch for me next year.
