Ugh, man. Glad it came down to two of the best though.

Man what a game. Binnington was clutch.

Great game. Exciting hockey. Now back to boring regular season until playoffs when pro hockey becomes watchable again.

Anyways, they'll never beat us when it truly counts. Roll on Milan on big ice that'll hurt them more than us too. Guys like Brady wont be nearly as effective. Bettman should be in prison for denying us McDavid and MacKinnon in the Olympics prior to this. and I'm seeing A LOT of tears re Hughes and McAvoy not playing while ignoring we had 3 of our top 6 dmen out. Lmao. |

They said last night on one of the broadcasts that it has a lot to do with team owners not wanting their star players to get hurt, which makes total sense. This was a fun yet meaningless tournament. Just look at Matthew Tkachuk getting injured and who will be out for a while now.

I've always thought the injury talk was nonsensical in a way. I get no one wants their star players to get hurt, but injuries are a matter of luck. These are well conditioned athletes and it's still the same sport. Your odds of injury are the same no matter what jersey you have on. I get there is a rest element, but again, half these guys won't even be in the postseason so playing 4 more games is not a relevant factor in my opinion. It can be a big win for owners having their players represent the national team on a huge stage. There's probably thousands of kids that watched that game last night and heard their NHL team called and are now looking at their parents asking them to spend money on a game, concessions, merch, etc. I am not a "grow the game" truther type, but to me these "international" events can have a massive impact at the local level and for NHL teams.

I mean, what's the goal, here? To make this mini-tournament more popular than the main dish (the Cup)? It was a perfect storm of the Canada vs USA bruhahah in facets other than hockey. If it was Russia vs Finland would that draw the newbies in the same way? Not likely. All those kids can go back to caring about field sports now. |

Goal is to get people into the sport. For example I have to go back to watching the absolutely crummy product that is the Philadelphia Flyers. No one is getting into the game watching them but watching and cheering for Team USA was a blast

Someone had to be making money off the 4NFO. They didn't put that on for free, especially not when ticket prices to get in the door last night were over $2K.
If they offer up those profits to the NHL owners, I'm sure they would be less hesitant to let their star players participate. As much as teams/owners say they care about winning the Cup (and I'm sure some of them do), they care more about money.

People need to show up to the 80+ regular games too and will pay more to see star players. You'll get more fairweather fans when the team is consistently good as well. There are a lot of promo opportunities for the home market in having a good team; you need ticket sales and merch for all the regular season games, too. Harder to sell w/out star players if they're carrying most of the team.
Say McDavid got injured and is out for the rest of the season, then Edmonton makes the Cup Final. I guess people think that's a cool risk, so okay. Give the fans - and a lot of the players who want international hockey - that option, in the middle of the season for what is an All-Star game, I guess. Anyway, sure it was fun. I enjoyed the tournament. Brady Tkachuk said he had never felt anything like that when he scored in the final game. Neat stuff for a young buck playing the game that he can take with him going forward. Binnington was fantastic and silenced his critics who thought his Game 7 win in 2019 was a fluke. Playing in that barn in Boston must be his favorite, that's for sure. |

Love this quote:
Jon Cooper on Team Canada delivering a win for the country: “I just hope Canada’s proud because every player in that room is proud to be a Canadian. And yeah, we needed a win. Not only our team, but Canada needed a win. And the players bared that on their shoulders. This one was different. This wasn’t a win for themselves. This was a win for 40-plus million people, and the guys knew it and they delivered.” |

Would really like to see this expanded to six teams next time around so that the Czechs aren't excluded.
If you want to continue to keep Russia out, then add Slovakia as the sixth team. |

When you have a leader of a military super-power country constantly taunting and threatening you, beating them at hockey is the most cathartic thing for us Canadians.
Also odd choice by the Americans to bench Kyle Connor, but as I Jets fan I approve keeping him out

Got double the ratings of the NBA All-Star Game. Can't wait to see Bettman absolutely run this format into the ground with all the dollar signs in his eyes. |
