I don't know if you are refering to me or the team that signs him as bag holder but I don't own any of his cards except maybe some commons. But you make a good point. Last time he had Tommy John it really took him two seasons before he was fully back. He hit ok in 2019 but not the level of the last couple of years. And 2020 he was bad at the plate and hit .190 but it's hard to judge that since it was the short covid season. So maybe offers aren't as high as he was expecting becasue teams are wary

pretty sure that any tailwind loss from his cards based on the assumption he'd become a dodger (if any) will be erased by spring excitement. There has been nothing but declines in his prices since September, so i would love for someone to show me the tangible hobby (price) benefit he got from becoming a presumed dodger. I don't know anyone that bought Sho cards because he was a lock to become a dodger.

True, and it’s what I think will happen… but do you see him committing 10 years to Toronto with no opt out?

I didn’t miss it. I think your grandeur isn’t helping you understand that the hobby (and Ohtani’s place in it) just expanded and will be just fine. I haven’t seen Soto’s cards exploding since his trade. Collectors will do what they do and not what you think they’ll do.

Lots of Chicken Littles running around this place.

I actually never understood the desire by some fanbases to add cards of a newly traded player that were made prior to him being on the team other than maybe a rookie card or rookie autograph. As a Yankees fan, I have no desire to collect any Soto cards prior to him being listed as a Yankee and/or in a Yankee uniform. Likewise, I won't be adding anymore Brito or Higgy cards once they are pictured in a Padres uniform.

Agreed, and I don't think Shohei wants to go through the FA circus again either. Not his style, so I'm thinking the Jays sign him to a long term deal.

Like you said, rookie cards aren't going anywhere, but Soto cards 2019-2023 should go down. Same for Ohtani, his 2018 cards aren't going to lose value, but other years in Angels uni will prob be less desireable.

Better than commuting in LA, am I right?

Seriously -- I think if he signs a long-term deal, he's going to have at least one optout. It's the norm nowadays for superstar free-agent contracts. Plus, it's a total power move that someone who demands that team's keep total silence on his meetings with them would do.

We've held through it before. 2019-2020 Actually was a great time to pick up his cards if you believed in his ability to recover.
If you're a collector, more power to you.

I commute everyday in the Washington, DC area. One year I took the train out to LA to then drive to Vegas. After just 2 days in LA traffic, I told myself I would never again complain about Washington, D.C. Metro area traffic.

I don't get the whole Soto thing either. Feels like all the bagholders collectively got on the internet for one final pump and dump.

Harper, Trout, and Judge all have no opt-outs and no-trade clauses put in their contracts. So I wouldn’t say it’s the norm for superstars. It’s not uncommon though.

But it's not just fans of a specific team that collect cards of players like Soto.....there are plenty of people who collect him because they think he's a star/future HOFer and don't really care which team he is currently playing for.

There are lots of other players who switched teams multiple times during their careers and fit into this category....Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Wade Boggs, Randy Johnson, Ken Griffey Jr., Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Albert Pujols, Miggy Cabrera, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, etc.

A lot of it depends on who accomplished what with which teams...the greatest demand generally tends to be for the team where the player became a star and/or accomplished the most.

Certain collectors may prefer their cards with a specific team, but it's not like their cards with other teams become uncollectible.

It's hard to really buy the talk of a team "being out of it" when Shohei's agent has said teams leaking anything is a huge no no. I'm sticking with my original order of Dodgers, Mariners, Rangers, Braves, with a longshot Cubs. No one outside of those 5 has a chance

Springer, Bichette, Ohtani, Vlad Jr. - I would not want to face the top of that lineup!
