As a general rule of thumb the more a player is being talked about, the more likely they are overpriced/overhyped. In that way, the people who are bothered by that and express themselves are sending a very useful market signal to anybody who is paying attention. Aside from BBases, they don't go into threads where the player is underpriced/underhyped. It's almost always going to be the flavor of the month/week/day, then they'll move on when the market moves on.

Another point I'll make is every single player will be overpriced at some point in their career. The trick is figuring out when that is. Sometimes a guy will finish in the top two in MVP balloting 7 out of his first 8 years and his cards will appreciate accordingly, but somewhere along the way he's going to lose it and his price will go down...even if ends up 500x where it started.

To answer the OP's question, no they don't. I try to identify and avoid them, but overhyped/overpriced players do not bother me.

“At the end of the day it’s grown men (mostly) collecting/hoarding/flipping pieces of paper or memorabilia with pictures or names/signatures of other grown men or young men. If you really boil it down, it’s kind of weird.”

This comment was made by my wife years ago at a card show. She had never been and saw all the men especially and said that. We got a signature of a HOF and she added “all of this for a guy who can hit a baseball?”. We talked about how you never see anyone lineup for hours to get Medal of Honor signatures, firefighters or EMT autos. Her comments actually helped me reevaluate my views of the hobby and his obsessed we all are about pieces of paper.
Many collectors a know how to budget and spend their money without it affecting their bottom line and I come here to enjoy seeing the amazing stuff they have or pulled. I buy way less than I did and I also know there are MANY who overspend and have even gone broke pursuing the “next great” or hot rookie/prospect. 2019-2021 we saw an influx of people getting into the hobby and some made huge money, but I believe many more lost their shirts or came close busting/breaking wax. The prices have become insane and price many collectors out of wax entirely, and even singles are overpriced in many aspects.
At the end of the day it’s supposed to be fun collecting cards, coins, stamps or wherever you enjoy. It’s supposed to be fun rooting for or razzing other fans of opposing teams/players. For many it still is. The ones who take it personally and verbally attack or insult others are truly the sourness of this hobby. “How dare you criticize my player!”. It’s so childish, immature and sad. As if that player or any of them knows any of us exist or care whet we say or think. All they care about is getting paid for their likeness or signature, and playing their sport or profession. And they all laugh at the fact that grown men stand in lines for hours just to get their signature, or push carts around a store filled with boxes of paper with pictures of other grown men on them.
Collect what you love, love what you collect, but in the end how we treat others says more than our collections or portfolios.

If you share who or what you like you’re subject to others opinions(usually negative) on here. That’s just the way it is.
I personally think it’s less about a pump or specific hatred and more about how we as humans crave affirmation and on the flip side revel in verbal humiliation.
In message board land we want to be liked and we like to belittle others in public.
