Ohtani is the leader in fwar in the AL without including his pitching.

Only 19 pts of ba keeps him from the triple crown.

Paid $175 for this bad boy back in 2021, I want to maximize my profit and am contemplating grading it. Only thing preventing me from sending this card to PSA for a PSA 10 is the thickness of the card.

Sure as hell looks Gem Mint to me. But grades on thick cards is sketch.

There's certainly truth to this. It wasn't till the recent two sales of the Orange Sapphire's that I've ever really considered selling mine...

That said, I believe there's still some room on them.

As long as he doesn't get hurt. He's already established as some sort of unicorn and will always be memorable / collectible, but he needs a couple of more seasons to truly transcend the sport imo.

Would be fascinating to know who on this thread that collected Ohtani or busted a lot of wax in 2018 sold in 2018 or 2019 at the bottom of the market or sold during 2021 at the top of the market (until now). It is interesting that many people on the board in general said they sold all their baseball cards in 2020 and 2021 at the Covid peak and laugh at bag holders like me and yet at the same time come to this thread claiming they are a huge Ohtani collectors and knew not to sell in the past.

I sold all the raw Ohtani I had laying around from 2018 wax during July to September 2021. I’m pretty sure that was the peak for those cards. Only mistake was not adding some big Ohtani last year.

I unfortunately sold all my Ohtani in 2020(including his sapphire for $500 right before the 2020 season) except for two cards..both rookie autographs (clearly authentic black auto to 75 and Optic Rated Rookie Black Holo auto numbered to 12). The Sapphire was the biggest card but i ripped a lot of 2018 wax so i prolly had 20+ copies each of his base cards from Update and Chrome Update not to mention other brands like Bowman. I can admit I didn't believe in him bc I thought injuries would always be a problem. Obviously a huge mistake but I'm thankful I hung on to those autos. I did buy some Ohtani in 2021 nothing big but like the 2nd year independence day parallel pitching for $68..a Topps Gold Series 2 rookie for $90 and a 2nd year Chrome Gold Wave PSA 9 for 75, which I'm sure are worth more than I paid for

Thus!! I have a good number of rare gems that I haven't reveal to public. Waiting for the price to hit a new high as a new norm.

There's a lot of survivorship bias going on in what you're describing. Collectors that legit bought and held Ohtani since 2018 are much more likely to post cards in this thread. And for every one of those collectors, there's a bunch that sold Ohtani's before his breakout 2021 season.

I personally did great buying/grading/selling Ohtani in 2019 and 2020. Long as you were buying around Thanksgiving and selling 2 weeks before opening day, you did great flipping just about any of the big names in baseball. At the time I was thrilled to double my money, but if I'd held I'd be sitting on like $50k in cards. That's fine though, can't win them all, some guys you wish you held (Ohtani), some guys you're happy you sold (Gleyber, Bieber, Austin Meadows, etc etc).

I started buying up Ohtani this past off season. Partly because I think his move to a new team will be a huge event, and because he's my favorite active player. I'm a vintage and 90's collector, never held ultra modern into the season, but am holding Ohtani this season. He's too much fun to not collect.

Just checked back on my transaction history: I bought my first Ohtani card on April 1st, 2022 (Heritage #600 Action PSA 10) and have been buying steadily ever since.

Was in the Tatis thread and it got me thinking...

Can you imagine what would happen if Ohtani got busted for PEDs? Feel like not only would his card market implode but it would hurt baseball really bad. That's how important he is.

It would also ruin the idea of loading him up on peds so he could hit like Bonds and pitch like peak Clemens. I want 75hr, .600 obp, 30-0 with 1.50 era and 350ks lol

I only have one Sho remaining from March 2021 purchase history, but it's a good one.

I've been flipping like a champ every since tho.

I remember watching the first time Ohtani pitched in Spring Training after he signed with the Angels, and was so enamored with what I saw of him on the mound and hearing he could really hit too that I immediately went on Ebay and bought a couple raw Heritage Actions, spent maybe $120 each or something. As 2018 went on I opened a ton of wax, including 8-10 cases of Topps Update. Had over 100 of each card, sold the Sotos, Gleybers and Acunas in lots and kept all the Shoheis. Pulled a Stadium Club Auto, a Stadium Club Gold Minted, an Update Ohtani/Ichiro printing plate (black I believe). Pulled multiple golds out of update, had stacks of his Topps Chrome stuff. Basically a shoe box full of Ohtani RCs.

Later that year, sold off my whole collection to keep my marriage together. Wife didn't approve of my reckless spending, and rightly so.

Got back into the hobby just before the 2020 season, he was hot in Spring Training and I loaded back up on Shohei. Was the first thing I did getting back in. That decision has paid off very well, and helps a ton with the sting of letting go of my Ohtani Collection V1 as I bought a lot more higher rarity (for me) stuff.

Good times. I think I may have related this story here before but I love to tell it, so there it is.

I ripped a dump truck worth of 2018 update and kept almost all of it because that’s who I am as a person. It’s working out ok so far

I have most of what I pulled in 2018 (mostly base).

I sold a Heritage Action in 2018 immediately after pulling for like $180. *shrug*

I sold a few base duplicates in summer of 2021.

I gave away a 2018 kanji Topps now card (base, not auto) to a friend whose daughter is obsessed with Japanese culture and also plays softball.

I am most fortunate in pulling a 2020 Allen & Ginter X Ohtani Gold Auto 2/5 when that product was released and even more fortunate that no one would offer over $225 on it. It remains in my collection and will forever more.
