Collect what you like, but don't put other options down. The hobby world is large enough to not have to piss on each other's boots.

We also learned in that AB that even a swarm of bugs cannot defeat the great Ohtani!

Anyone know how the Optic white sparkle was offered in 2018?

Was it points for packs on the website like current packs are offered? Also, is there a pitching and batting variation, like in the Optic set? I picked this one up off Ebay, and have only seen one other, also running.

Some other neat ones:

It might not be huge to you, but I love that card! I’ve been looking forever to pair one just like that with my gold #1. Congrats!

Your MLB leader in OPS, HRs, RBIs, and SLG is on the bump tonight! AL player of the month for June goes without saying, right?

I try to follow the low and medium end of the Ohtani card market as best I can. It seems that some of his cards peaked in 2021 and have not returned to those prices (mainly base cards like Bowman and Topps chrome) and other cards (numbered, SP and SSP) seem to be reaching new highs. For the veteran collectors of this group what is your short term (next 6 to 12 months) and your long term (5+ years) outlook of what the Ohtani card market is going to look like?

I started collecting again during Covid, but I was wondering if there were any parallels with Mike Trout? For those who collect both players, was there a time where Trouts cards were hitting all time highs and thought to be peaking, but in retrospect it was just the tip of the iceberg and his cards took off?

For transparency I have a ton of low and medium end Ohtani cards, but I am not looking to sell in the short or long term. I want to hold and ride the wave!

sean,

i love collecting. i rarely look to see what cards are "going for" after i own them and dont want anymore copies.

for me, this has been the best way to collect. i know that not everyone agrees.

i would recommend you keep collecting in the best capacity you can.

you (nor i), will ever be able to compete with a lot of the folks posting in this thread, and that is perfectly OK

IMO, Ohtani is on a whole different level than anyone else playing baseball today, and i think his popularity is just getting started

I monitor prices on "PC" cards for a couple reasons:

1. Validate my purchasing strategy was sound, primarily with respect to timing and adjust if I learn there might have been a better way to go.

2. See if something hits a price where even though I had planned on a card being PC I'd be willing to sell. (I do this far less frequently).

Typically for #1 I'll just monitor prices for a few months after a purchase and then stop looking it up. For #2, when someone starts getting a lot of hype and news-cycles I'll check the market for what I have to see if its a good time to sell and maybe buy back on a downswing.

Of course for ultra rare stuff that doesn't pop up often I'm far less likely to be willing to sell in this way as I may never have another chance to buy it back.

Great looking 18/19 Ohtani parallels.

I'm excited to go to the game tonight to see Shohei on the mound.
I'm hoping to see HR #27, but more importantly if he allows 1 or fewer ER he can get his ERA back to under 3.00 where it belongs.

First off, I agree with TBP. Collect what makes you happy and what you like.

I missed the boat with many of the high end Ohtani "RC" cards from 2018.

There is nothing wrong with the lower end base cards. I have some I opened
from the packs I bought. I learned early on that those cards are not for me.
Similar to vintage, I prefer to buy the odd ball or harder releases for players.
Base cards are not it.

I sold many of my base Acuna and Soto cards when they were hot. Can't believe the Soto base chrome was a $300 at one time. Maybe more.
I forget.

Now, I see cards like the Ohtani Bowman chrome batting pose going for $600 and
I can't believe it. If I had a stock of those, I would be selling all but one.
This would give me the chance to buy some of the tougher issues.
