Nice to see a fellow Central Valley poster here!

I have been on COMC picking up a ton of raw 70's football. It is insane how cheap star HOF's are.

DiMaggio and Charlie "King Kong" Keller. btw, if anybody ever has time, please read "The Hero's Life" by Richard Cramer, it's a really good book on DiMaggio. i read it during the lockdown of COVID and i fell in love with the Yankee Clipper. good stuff.

also, these Double Play cards are really too sweeeeeet
I am watching the Ken Burns baseball doc right now and just finished the episode with DiMaggio. Apparently he was a quiet, very private person....the exact opposite of Ruth.

oh yeah. read the book i mentioned, if you ever have a chance.

DiMaggio was insanely private. he'd go to eat by himself, and usually ate alone too. the more i learn about him, the more i'm fascinated by him.

Why people need 8's for these cards is beyond me. That 4 is a beauty and most likely not touched by a card doctor. I don't have a 54 Bowman, think it is time to look for one.

Default Fan Craze

Attachment 540276These cards technically came from a game so they have been flying under the radar, but they do precede the 206s by 3 years. They are actually from 1906, not 1904. PSA mistakenly attributed the AL set to 1904 when they graded these early on. Fan Craze did have cards in 1904 but those cards had no actual players on them. These cards are a great option to pick up these stars for a fraction of the T206s. They are on the scarcer side, on average only 30-40 have been graded per star player and there aren't too many raw copies floating around, but they do pop up on eBay or in auctions from time to time.

It's been a while since I posted here. It looks like there has been some awesome stuff going on in this thread. Some outstanding adds for everyone. Here are some of mine over the last few months.

Dipping my toe in raw prewar, so took a flyer on my favorite player from the era.

As a strip card that had dotted lines and all, it is absolutely trimmed.

Started collecting vintage in 2019 and still learning the ropes. Not sure what’s in my budget - mostly going for auctions but always overestimating values, which is why I’d been keeping to lower-grade cards.

May not be anything fancy yet, but I keep hearing its a marathon and not a sprint, so I’m trying to take it slow and steady.

Depending on how people feel about eBay authentication — with that and sticking to GMC for raw, I’m confident the chances I bought any altered cards valued at $250+ or through GM are virtually nonexistent, if that’s fair. I definitely have tons of respect for the time and dedication BODA and the community spent on exposing the trimmers when I got back into the hobby. It was a sobering experience to happen upon.

As far as values, I try to check comps but sometimes prices are all over the place, and the research can be draining. If anything, I’d like to be a smarter buyer.

Definitely overestimated the value of the 54 T Mays — would have put a bit more effort into a nicer copy if I knew then what I know now. Plan to upgrade, but I still love owning it.

The 54 T Jackie is my first of his. Was surprised to learn even a Jackie Robinson can still be quite affordable considering how long I’d been gone from the hobby. I could be wrong, but I think I remember when it was at least a $50 card in the late 80s. Yikes… anyways, hello.

nice Campy rookie!

i've been trying to nail down a Duke Snider rookie, but it's just a little above my budget.

I don't post too often but here's my newest addition. Been wanting this card for about six years, happy to make it a reality this week.

Love the Jimmy Foxx!!

I already have a SGC graded 2.5 of this card. I came across this one and was able to work out a price with the seller.

Working on a Topps era HOF pitcher run (no RC, different year for each). Very happy to land this one of Rapid Robert.

Just need the '53 Satchel to wrap it up.
