My silly little theory is that even if he does end up being more well known for his bat, he's still going to be MOSTLY known as the bat that also pitched.

For that reason - I will gobble up all the pitching images I can

Collecting Shohei is like eating a Reese's...there's no wrong way to do it.

Shotime is the greatest. A unicorn of our time. Speaking of shohei I am waiting for what I believe is his first ever bat knob auto 1/1 to come from topps redemption. The redemption reads as follows- team logo bat knobs auto parallel. But if Googled there are non in existence. Am I the lucky person that receives his 1st ever bat knob auto 1/1 and I have a gold mine????

Iknowright? How can anyone call themselves a serious modern baseball collector and not have a Shohei stash????

So fun to watch and root for, and the stash makes it all the sweeter.

Defintely all stashes are not created equal, but having a few of his cards put back for the future is not a bad thing. However, his liquidity is crazy and his stuff, including his low end base RC card graded, seems to all be touching a Benjamin in Gem grade.

I once had close to 60 Ohtani RC cards, base brands, and even the SGC and CSG slabs sold very strong. HE IS LIKELY the only player that has such a close ROI. I have several I still own, with more at PSA, but his Unicorn status is without question now!

The man is incredible. Wasn’t but a week ago that he was slumping big time.

I think if we project out a few years (Ohtani 35+) his pitching will age better than his bat. JMO

I have a similar story and had a similar base RC stash. Sent in over 60 to PSA including some nice pinks, a purple heritage etc. The order literally came back the day after he struck out Trout in the WBC, and I've since sold off all the base stuff and kept about 15 of the rarer/nicer stuff to hold as close to forever as makes no difference. I still have 4 I've yet to send which is really the pinnacle of my Ohtani collection, but I'm balking at the fees for the bigger cards.

- 2018 Bowman Chrome Refractor /499
- 2018 Topps Chrome Image Variation

I'm incredibly thrilled with the stash I have left and am happy with the prices I got for what I recently sold off. It's been good to be a Shohei believer!

THanks good. Al I have is some base and inserts. No rookies, no autos. To most that's a junk collection.

I snagged up gobbles of low # parallels early on and due to PSA/Covid, I just stashed them away and kept buying.

Honestly - looking back, it was one of the greatest buying opportunities of my time in collecting. I wish I went harder.

Just bought tickets to take my three boys (5, 7, and 9) to see Sho play Thursday at the Rangers! Will be their first game since they've gotten really into MLB and they won't know we're going until we get in the car for the three hour drive. Pumped!

Have fun! I hope you have something lined up to stay overnight - 6 hours of driving with three young boys, with a baseball game in the middle, is a recipe for disaster!

Here's to hoping he pitches & slugs the Angels to victory! Have fun and share pics if you can!

My wife and I finished the Ohtani puzzle.

Here's the other side (we cheated and just flipped it over):

I don't collect Mike Trout, but I was wondering if Ohtani has now over taken him in the hobby now? I assume Ohtani is more popular than Trout with the fans considering his international appeal. For those that collect both do you think Ohtani cards will eventually be more sought after and more valuable one day?

Ohtani IS the hobby right now. They will both be very collectable for now and the future as one is a unicorn and the other a future HOFer.

Here's a little comparison of how Shohei is hitting this season compared to his MVP season.

2021
46HR 100RBI 103R .257AVG .965OPS

2023 (pace through 68 games)
47HR 119RBI 100R .291AVG .955OPS
