This. All of my biggest cards are ones that I bought cause I enjoyed them. There was a time during 2019 when Ohtani was batting .190 with a busted elbow and I only bought what I really liked. I was mentally prepared for the cards to be worth as much as a Kenji Johjima collection, and that was fine with me because the cards were awesome.

Gotta buy in bad times and good times. That's collecting.

As I was writing that, I remembered a time in late 2019 when I was trying to buy a HMT1 Xfractor. Nobody wanted Ohtani at that time and he was literally the butt of 70% of Blowout jokes. People would literally make fun of you in the acuna and soto thread if you said you PC Ohtani.

Anyway, guy had it up for like 3 months and nobody bought it at $80 or something. I offered $40 and we kept quibbling about the serial # and I told him I don't care about serial #s and ended up just accepting a $50 counter when I was drunk. I figured I've made worse decisions in life.

I remember those days!

Congrats on the long game. You may have been drunk but you may have also turned that seller into an alcoholic after he realized he sold an iconic card for $50.

I bought this raw Xfractor for $350 in August of 2021. It is the most I have paid for a single Ohtani card in my collection. At the time it seemed like a very reasonable price! I was very sober and excited when I bought it. Obviously the card has gone down in value since I bought it with raw copies dropping down to $200ish. I bought the card because the Xfractor is my favorite refractor. Good news is its a PSA 10 candidate if I were to get it graded!

Haha, I'm sure he moved on, along with the other 98% of people that pulled Ohtani cards and said something like "I wish it was an Acuna/Soto or even Gleyber." Hindsight can be mean. Remember when update had the "big three" rookies and Ohtani was not in the count?

That's a nice card! Don't sweat it. If you keep adding RC parallels, you will end up acquiring one that outperforms.

For example, the same $s placed in the 150 chrome variation (it was around $300 then) would have ended up slightly appreciating since then. It's funny how those official SP and SSP pedigrees work.

Also, base always balloons back up once the season gets started - maybe this is the year you can offload some and reconsolidate to parallels (if you want). Either way, not many players have the ceiling of "best player ever" so it will be a fun ride!

I only have the Ohtani Trout Gold Rainbow left;
sold other 5 cards last 2021.
I think I did fairly well, considering I couldn't give them away at the end of 2020.

Digging from my historical comp knowledge, enough for a solid down payment on a house in a median-high US neighborhood. 2021 was wild. I held knowing that it would be a while before it ever reached those levels again. 2023 may be that year!

To be clear, I did sell a lot, but a couple in this thread unloaded everything and don't even post here anymore

Biggest regret, even bigger than not getting in on Acuna back when he was in RK/A+ ball, was not picking up Ohtani when he was hurt. I meant to buy a bunch of his stuff, but I made some PC purchases and blew my limited load.

This set specifically highlights how, during this period of BGS, it was a joke to call anything with 9 corners or even 9.5 edges a gem mint card.

It seems as though standards have tightened up, but holy cow was this an arbitrage opportunity to squeeze out gem after gem with clear flaws.

PSA 7/8 today.
