10K grading fee to crossover a BGS 9 to PSA 9 even if it doesn't. Yay

Buying a pop 1 PSA 9 is a bad bet. Very unlikely it remains a pop 1, none higher.

Not apples to apples comparison but it reminds me of Usain Bolt 2008 RC PSA 10 that I purchased for 20K last year when it was pop 3. Two sold in the 20K range last year. It is pop 9 now and I picked up a second PSA 10 today for 4K. Who knows, some sucker might pay a huge amount for the first PSA 9 to hit the market

The high grading fee (3k/10K) will likely keep the PSA 8 and 9 pop low because not many owners of BGS 8.5 and 9's will take the risk of crossing them over.

With the cost of even attempting a crossover ($10k), I expect it to stay in the single digits. No way there's a PSA 10 out there. I've seen the three 9.5's; they all have issues.

The newly graded PSA 9 was originally BGS 8.5.

I am assuming the grading fee was 5K based on a valuation between 100K-250K

Shhh don't tell the PSA-pumping fanboys that or they'll be all over ya. HAHA No joke they think BGS 8's are 5's, 6's at best. Ridiculous really.

It happens. Most bgs 8.5 are PSA 7s. Especially if they have weak corners. Thats just the way it is.

I read about the 9 popping on the Star basketball Facebook page this morning. You could find the picture of the card there in its original BGS holder but it has since been removed. From what I could gather from the page a really nice 101 was graded by Beckett earlier this year. Came back a BGS 8.5 with 9s and 9.5s for subs on surface, corners, and edges and got robbed with an 8 on centering. Centering looked really nice to me. I guess the owner recently cracked and subbed to PSA and it just came back as a 9. The picture of the card in the BGS holder looked really nice and better than most BGS 8.5s and 9s I’ve seen. I think the key is it didn’t appear to have any chipping on the corners or edges which I think PSA will punish pretty harshly. And once again, I thought the centering looked really nice, much better than most BGS 8 centering subs I’ve seen. I think if you are trying to buy a BGS 101 to regrade with PSA then Inwould focus on nice corners and edges over anything else.

Easy to nitpick when a card is magnified 10x, but I am not sure about the top right corner and the right upper edge.

My thoughts exactly seems like a generous grade.

Thanks for the post on the PSA 9… nice.

Looks like there’s 39 #101’s already graded. Definitely some being crossed over. Only 1 Auth.

Best centering I have seen on that card though. 95% of them are off center so this is a rarity

Can't believe BGS gave that card an 8 centering

A bgs 8.5 crossed to a PSA 9? I thought it would take a black label to do that

I think the real suckers are those forking over 250k on low numbered serial numbered cards of unproven players based primarily on speculation and pumping

Do I like watching and rooting for these young guys? Sure. Would I pay these prices for their rare high end cards? Never. I'll buy those cards when they have an established career instead of just hopes of one

Anyone that knows anything about the Star 101 XRC knows there actually won't be as many PSA 8s or 9s as many are "assuming" there will be

Will the pop go higher?

Sure

But the pop on PSA 9 XRCs won't come even remotely close to the 300+ pop PSA 10 86 Fleer anytime soon

Contrary to the narrative I am seeing lately, I don't think there will be this crash on higher grade Star XRCs as many are hoping simply because I don't feel there will be as many PSA 8 and 9s as many think. Of course the PSA pop is going to increase when the card has just started being graded. I just don't think there are as many high graded copies per PSA grading standards as BGS where most 8.5s snuck through BGS subgrade grading system

If the Star corrects I think it will be more of a result of a slumping economy than a surging pop report

The Star is nowhere near 86 Fleer in terms of population

In 5 years I can't see more than 50 PSA 9 101s which is still less than 20% of the 86 Fleers PSA 10s

While I understand the 86 Fleer is currently the hobby darling it is more and more clear that value is what seems to determine importance in this current hobby. When something sells high the reasons and justification always follow the sale because it's a dollar driven hobby now

Personally I don't agree with this assessment as there are many MJ cards that are currently valued high but long term have 0 historical significance whatsoever. Usually it's only because of a serial number which are mainly sought out to corner for manipulation. Imo serial numbers have become a pretty weak crutch and cheap substitute of importance in the current Panini Parallel Saturation Era

I’ve been tempted to see how this OC gem might cross to psa. The risks and grading fees are a bit of a turnoff though.
