Jeff Passan
@JeffPassan 12h

Over the last three weeks, Shohei Ohtani has put up 2.5 Wins Above Replacement. He has been the single best pitcher in baseball and the 15th-most-productive offensive player.

So many take for granted what he's doing. Don't. This is a once-in-a-lifetime show. Relish greatness.

That is amazing context, he is on an incredible run here!

No doubt. I'm just sick of watching a guy stand on the mound covering his ears because he can't hear the sign.

Dude might've passed up Judge in the MVP race in like a week and a half.

They should just dissolve the Angels roster into the rest of the league.

Always laugh. It's going to get to a point where people only watch Angel games for Ohtani pretty soon anyway.

That Apple TV broadcast crew was so bad that I had to watch the game muted. I found myself asking why I'm watching a game with a horrible broadcast while rooting for a horrible team. Ohtani.

I think that is sort of a legit question. I agree Ohtani is the best buy/investment in baseball cards right now. He is the only two way player that can be both a top 15 hitter and pitcher at the same time and is capable of being an MVP player in a given year. I think if he gets to a WAR of 60 or above or plays around 10 years as a two way player he will be elected to the HOF. As long as her performs he should be one of the most popular players in the league/face of the game.

Even if he gets injured in the future, he appears to be the type of player that wants to be the best player in the game and will play a long time in the league. So I agree there is injury risk. But there is zero character risk...as in he will do anything in his power to play and be the best.

I mean, go into any player thread and unsolicitedly suggest a catastrophic injury with no prior context. Legit is generous

He turns 28 tommorow, has the equivalent of 3 full seasons played, and seemingly just gets better.

He’s got 19 WAR on baseball reference, I can’t figure out his fangraphs WAR, he’s about to play in his 2nd AS game, and if his second half is as good as his first half, he stands a good chance of winning his 2nd MVP.

As others have pointed out, he probably needs to put up 5-6 more similar seasons to merit HOF induction. Considering his age, it does seem possible should he avoid major injury.

My head tells me that he has three more full-time two way seasons left in him. I am hoping it's more but the reality of your body after age 30 is hard to deny. Perhaps an Eck/Ortiz career path for his later years.

My heart tells me that he is going to have the Ichiro career path and dominate through his thirties

I’m with you…don’t let a couple of jerks who get their kicks consistently inserting doubt and negativity bring you down…they have their own (dark?) motivations and it’s a good sign that you have to marvel at what their reasons are for posting what seem to be partisan comments. enjoy what ohtani is doing because it’s amazing and historic.
