Topps cards will essentially be done after 2023 when their deal with the players association ends, unless they want to make card without players on them for a few years

Are you sure topps deal with the PA ends after 2022 or just that fanatics begins in 2023.

i don’t believe the pa deals are exclusive, hence panini having the right to use player name and likeness, they just don’t have a deal with mlb for team name and logo.

well fanatics has until 2026 to get a team in place to design and produce cards… i’m sure topps has some people that will be looking for work!

Strategic reason why some of us are now F1, soccer and GPK fans.

Haha, I'm happy I decided to keep my F1/UEFA/GPK sapphire boxes (well, I did sell 1 of 5 F1 boxes).

So I’m curious as to would this leave all licensing decisions up to fanatics? Meaning there’s obviously a market opportunity here that could include them having to do nothing themselves. They could license all 3 major sports to both Topps and panini and collect on that and not produce any actual cards themselves. Or would this type of thing probably be in the contract as something they’re not allowed to do With the license?

I am happy Topps lost the license! The customer service is absolutely wretched. Send you wrong product, and don't do anything about it except months later close your ticket and give you a 15 percent off coupon. Hold times for hours. POS website. Then overproduce stuff like crazy. Good Riddance!

I wonder if Brian Gray will honor our Montgomery memberships when he buys what's left of Topps and releases Leaf Bowman Perfect Game Sapphire

It’s done at the end of 22: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/32052284

They have MLB, but not the PA after that for 3 years.

You guys had one of the sweetest deals in sports cards the last couple years—congrats for that. Fanatics will not be that generous.

"Terms of the deal are unclear, but sources say that both MLB and MLBPA will have an equity stake in the new company formed from scratch just to produce trading cards." -- IMO this is one of the major reason of the move.

Owning a part of the company that produces your card is always a W.

It's always about the $. Consumers, particularly the die-hard collectors here, are not even considered.

My understanding is that the MLBPA exclusivity begins in 2026 concurrently with the MLB exclusivity.

Topps will be happy to shell out another $20-25MM/yr for 2023-25. And the MLBPA will be happy to accept it.

He probably hasn't bought from Fanatics for hyped items. It's worse than Topps

that’s what i thought but the espn article does explicitly say both topps and panini deals with the mlbpa end after 2022.

had never even heard of Fanatics until like a month ago...and they are an 18bil company? wtf that is nuts

This like Coke losing their license to make Coke....mind boggling stuff. I don't want to live in a world without Topps baseball cards. I barely know Fanatics but I already hate them
