Not opening them. Holding every single one of them. It looks like they are drying up. To be honest, I think it is a good investment.

It's Ohtani or nothing in that set. Now that I think about it the loubobs were redemptions that are now expired. If that were the case I'd rather just buy Ohtani cards. I hear you if it were 2018 update since it's like owning a well balanced index fund (Soto, Acuna, Ohtani, Bieber, etc.), but 2018 Bowman is literally just one player.

Or just buy a Bowman Ohtani pitching auto. Not many cards have Mike Trout BCA-like potential. I don't care what anyone says, it's his 1st Bowman and anyone remotely close to the card industry in 2018 would agree.

UNTIL Ohtani started to do Ohtani things, those boxes were mostly garbage. Even as things heated up in every other possible Bowman release, because of the Robert redemption, you could get these boxes CHEAP. Hunter Greene obviously looks ok now and you've got guys like Ruiz, deichmann, and A Gimenez and some others that have potential... but NOTHING close to anything supporting that box price other than chrome Robert and the Ohtani lotto ticket.
I definitely support the "keep it sealed"... For Jumbo, there are 2.4 rookie autos per Jumbo case... and even if it wasn't SP... you would have 1 Ohtani every 7 cases on average. Probably closer to 1/15 cases if I remember the estimate I built on the print run for the Ohtani specifically. |

I know it’s expired, but does Topps still give out Luis Roberts first Bowman chrome auto out of Bowman? Or do they send another card?

Any idea of the approximate value of card I posted a little bit ago to this thread?
Ohtani 2021 Luminaries Hit Kings autograph relic / 15. I am usually more of a football and basketball guy and bought a box of this on a whim. |

Look at the prices of 2009 Bowman DP & P retail boxes. You have a better chance of jumping off the top of your roof and landing on my nuts than you do of pulling a Trout Auto out of the retail boxes. Do people care? Nope. They keep dropping many, many thousands of dollars on those boxes. Casinos aren't bulletproof moneymakers because people think rationally when it comes to the chances of them being the one that wins. One thing we know for certain about those boxes, they'll never be cheaper (unless Ohtani gets eaten by a shark tomorrow or something). Arthur

I have written this here before but not to this level of detail. This was a journey with Shohei that I started in back in December. I decided that he was my guy (he still very much is). I never intended to sell this, as I never intended/expected/desired it to be worth what it is, but that value has gone to place that I have had to reckon with. The answer to the question of if I am tapping out is sort of, because if I don't do something like this it would be poor stewardship of a golden goose for my family. Here are some of the prices I paid along the way, and the PSA APR is today: Bowman $25 / $286 Bowman Chrome $51.01 / $1017.78 Bowman's Best $30.31 / $211.57 Finest $25 / $316.42 It is like this for 59 cards. It has been the equivalent of catching lightning in a bottle. Now add two /10 Dynasty's for less $900 each that are a PSA 9 & 10 - pop 1's. A pop 3 /25 auto for $950 and two additional POP 1 auto's /99 and unnumbered for less than $500 each. I have always been in disbelief with people's greed in shows like Deal or No Deal. I had to play real life deal or no deal because my PC increased in value 12x-14x in six months. ..if he was 22 and just getting started, I wouldn't sell. ..if we was 32 and almost to the end of his career, I wouldn't sell. He's 27, coming off an injury, having a season of all seasons, in a year where the current MLB contract expires. Pretty much regardless of where it finishes, it will be more money that we will have ever had in the bank - after taxes, after tithing, after vacation savings, and after replenishing the card fund. If the estimate I got from the auction house is right, it could be the equivalent to my annual salary. So all that said, I am trying to do the right thing and I still have the #1 Basic Set and just today bought 2018 Monty Set #1 PSA 10 and Warm Up Shirt PSA 10 as I look to re-fill my Shohei frame. I am not planning on going anywhere cause I love this kid! There you go! Last edited by NYRE2PECT; 08-15-2021 at 02:52 PM. |

I doubt you will get anything. It's over a year past redemption. If it were close, I'm sure they would have pretended to care more. There is a date on the redemption for a reason, right or wrong.

Sounds like you made a tough decision for the right reasons and it's not even going to kill your Ohtani collection. Win-win. You'll never regret taking advantage of an opportunity that benefits your whole family. Good job by you! Arthur

This is the way. Family first I applaud your use of logic, selflessness, and I most certainly care. It’s not giving up on your guy to sell something when the price is right. Everyone should read your post.My journey back into the hobby was taken after an inspirational visit to Cooperstown with the purpose of building a legacy collection for my kids. TBP among many other gracious members gave me some great advice to find my footing the Brave New World our hobby had become. I made some great picks, COVID happened, everything went sky high. The house I just purchased was in need of renovations, my wife had a teaching credential to pay for, and I had three (now four) mouths to feed. It didn’t matter what cards I had, the answer was to sell to improve life for my family, no regrets. Now I’m in a better financial place, and I’m back to rebuilding a stash for the kids and having a ton of fun in the process. Thanks for sharing your story. Respect. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
