Messi says he wants to play in the US.

GaryVee put a vid up on his account saying the wanted the Pele. That explains the price. Just not sure if he was the buyer or seller

A lot of low grade Pele RC's setting strong prices, a PSA 1 Alfa going for $13k which would have got you a 7 or 8 a couple of years ago. Also strong sales of a high grade 3rd year Maradona Panini and a Rashford gold Prizm as well as a strong early price point on Foot 19/20 Camavinga ($485). Mbappe Silver Prizm and Foot 16/17 held the recent lows, Sancho Donruss was weak especially with so much at once during a period of bad form.

I'm a little surprised all the 2014 Prizm didn't push prices even lower, the Messi's didn't do too badly and held at recent prices along with a PSA 9 silver. In general I was expecting some weak prices with it typically being one of the quieter parts of the season cycle (buyers tapped out at Christmas, midseason breaks and being as far from trophy football as possible), while "quantity" was under pressure it wasn't as bad as I was expecting and "quality" is still selling very well. I think there is still a month or two of pain for some of the mass produced stuff with bulk grading orders from the run up to the peak still not back, but once we get into knock out UCL in late Feb / early March and get titles being decided and EURO 2020 hype demand will start to outpace supply.
That night was a very fun auction to participate in, and to watch. There were so many great cards in general, and related to this thread, a number of excellent soccer cards (one of which was a grail of mine that I was fortunate to win).

Some of the more common cards sold for lower than I thought, and, to your point, other, rarer cards are still going for high prices. There were so many cards I would have loved to bid on, but given that this was a very large auction (with cards ending seconds from each other), I had to be selective.

I am interested to see if your point about timing will be correct: I would venture to agree that we are in a lull period, and that once CL finals come around, and other major tournaments, the hype will be high.

Let's remember that low print cards of soccer stars can still be bought for fractions of other sports. If we are in this for the long term, this is all a buying opportunity if possible.

Interesting article in the NY Times about how much the stimulus boosted the US economy:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/01/u...gtype=Homepage

Flipside is that by printing so much money, the Fed has significantly devalued the US dollar, which is currently at 4-year lows against pretty much all other currencies.

the dollar has always been shite against any decent currency. Anyway, it's brilliant news for people in Europe that already have to pay astronomical prices for sealed wax from resellers + international shipping + customs fees. Heh.

I take it this is new for 2021 set. Have yet to see a retail release of Champs LG Chrome for the first 3 releases.

I didn't want to start a new thread, it doesn't deserve one, and figured enough would see it in here - Is anyone else having issues recently with Ship My Cards?

The site keeps breaking for me, and I've got unanswered tickets from December.

I just got notification on a Van Dijk Obsidian patch auto, hopefully they are making progress on their backlog.

I hope so, only about another 50 to go ranging from months to years

I've got a few Fernando Tatis RC autos I'd quite like before 2055

There's going to be hundreds like her. Big props for her having the humility to admit her massive losses - many wouldn't, and would pretend it never happened while trying to maintain an air of luck and success.

I don't care what player (unless it's Jordan) anyone paying thousands for modern base is a frikkin moron. A good warning for everyone jumping on board hypetrains. In a train crash there's barely any survivors if any at all. The soccer rush was a brutal bloodbath. I still remember someone buying hundreds and hundreds of Dybala convinced he was the next big thing, and now he's back in the $1 bin.

Brutal but not surprising. Takes a lot to make that video. Paying $3700 for a not even silver bass of Ronaldo 2014, which was his third World Cup.

Some enormous "oofs" in that clip. It almost sounds like she just made the purchases on a whim (i.e. "This player is really good, so I bought this PSA 10 card").

Plenty of people were paying prices like that, and forums/reddit were pumping every last drop out of it.

Prizm cards for known players were going through waves of each release as people consumed anything they could get.

It's insane. It will be interesting to see how soccer/futbol hobbyists will reflect back on all of this in 10-20 years.

Dybala is an interesting example. He did win the Serie A Player of the Year award last season, has been on the Team of the Season multiple times, and is now entering the prime years of his career. Yet, his cards are dirt cheap. You really can get a Donruss rookie for less than a dollar. The issue isn't that he hasn't been good, or that he can't yet be a superstar (look at DeBruyne, Modric, Lewandowski, etc.), but rather that the market just doesn't really exist absent hysteria around certain guys.

You can probably buy his donruss rookies for dollar as his rookie releases are several years older, his Panini Argentina 2011/12 and Panini Calciatori 2012/13 sell reasonably well. The big problem for him though is that he is in the shadow of Messi for Argentina and Ronaldo for Juventus, he'll never fully take off until he is the man on either team.

He's 28 this year, and getting linked with clubs like Tottenham and Atletico rather than Barca or Liverpool.

I don't think we will see much more from him now. He should have Joined Arsenal or Man Utd half a decade ago when he had the chance and stepping stoned from there.

Yeah, I think he's missed the window to be a big superstar now but there is a chance he'll have a couple of late peak-ish years out of the shadow of the big 2.

I think it also has to do with the fact that Serie A has lost most of its glamour.

Juventus has dominated the title race for most of the past decade, and Italian clubs have had very little impact in European competitions.

Not like the 90's, when AC Milan was the one of the best clubs in the world, Juventus and Inter were also top clubs, and Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina, and Parma all were strong as well.

He just turned 27 and is coming off an MVP season. DeBruyne is 29 and the best in the world in a similar role. Modric won the Ballon d'Or at 33. Lewandowski was the best in the world last year at 31. It might be too late for Dybala to put up career numbers that jump off the page, but I'm not sure his window to become a superstar has passed. Except in the hobby it has, which I guess was the point. Just a really narrow market.
