Yesterday morning I woke up and made my first purchases of Project 2020. Between this thread and eBay, I looked up and it was 2:30 in the afternoon!
Today I’m supposed to meet a local seller to pick up 8 of those cards. The clock is NOT moving! |

PSA for everyone buying preorders off of ebay in here. If the seller's other items include Supreme/Bape/etc, don't buy. If you do see Supreme/Bape/etc, make sure the card is in hand and on a day the PO is open.

How do we purchase directly from Topps? Cards go live at a certain time every day?

Oh man, we definitely need to keep a list of not only who backs out on pre-sales, but their excuses. That would be pure comedy!

This scares the eff out of me. Granted, this is just manipulating the market and increasing the prices . . . .but at some point it is going to crash.... isn't it?

This seems more and more its people speculating vs true demand for these cards, but who knows. I bought some because I actually wanted them. I'll buy rest from topps or TwinsJake.

I'm certain this has been touched on in the past in this thread. From the sideline, it appears the allure is derived from the belief that these cards have a higher ceiling than any traditional Topps release, because there's a crossover market between urban art/sneakerhead/pop art fanatics/non-sports fans and baseball cards. Man, I'm not seeing it. Not long enough for it to be sustainable. Not long enough to want to sink money into this. I looked up "ermsy" on Instagram. The artist posts a picture of each card they make, in addition to their other projects. A picture of Bettie Boop partaking in some adult activity next to a lustful Garfield has garnered nearly 10,000 "likes"... the Dwight Gooden card has under 1,500 likes. For whatever an Internet like is worth, I'm sensing that these cards may not garner the same interest in an untapped market as baseball card speculators are hoping. There's too many weird factors in a play. I recognize that this isn't Topps Living Set--which had a ton of hype, had no limitation on number of cards which could be produced, and has seen waning interest. Topps Living set began with common players having 3-4k print runs, saw that balloon to 7-9k, including close to 50k on Acuna, and has since dropped to a fairly consistent ~2k on common players. Most of these cards are available for under MSRP. The exception would be if you got one of the very early commons (Panik, Markakis) prior to the ballooning print run, which have provided significant ROI ($10 to $75-80). I think the artist crossover is a much more compelling product. However... Even on the low-end at 1,000 copies--that's not a small amount of cards. If you're buying because you love the cards and the artist, then the price point doesn't matter. If you're buying as an investment (which appears to be what most are doing), you're speculating on some combination of: 1) Sustained interest in the project 2) Popularity of the artist increasing 3) Demand exceeding supply What i find very unsettling is this mentality that you can list a card at a hefty premium, and expect to wake up the next day and the card be sold (as was mentioned a couple pages back). This is not how rational markets behave. Not to mention these "articles" which read like penny stock boiler room material. Flippers ordering cards from other flippers, listing them at huge premiums prior to receiving the card, and then canceling orders because the first flipper no longer wants to sell a card at what appears to have exponentially increased in value? I understand the rookie card market can be irrational from a gambling angle--group breakers charging premiums to give people a small shot at hitting a whale, all that fun psychological stuff. This is bag holder territory and people are going to get burned. Last edited by Boredlawyer; 05-25-2020 at 09:59 AM. |

Just picked up the last two I needed to complete the "first of each artist" set, Oldmanalan Gwynn and Thiele Mays. Cards 1-18, 21, and 73. I bought most of them at retail from Jake but stupidly skipped a few. I think I'll finish out the sets of Ermsy, Saladeen, and maybe Siff, those are my favorite artists from the set.

Sorry that you think it’s weird, you’re just thinking about it very, very narrowly. I trust that if TwinsJake get shorted by Topps, drops my cards in the spaghetti, dog chews it- he will send me one of his personal cards as a replacement instead of my $16. If Topps screws up my $1,000 market price card- they will refunded me $19.99. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
