Question 1998 Contenders Proof Set 1/1???

Recently came across a card of a PC player from 1998 Contenders stamped "Proof Set" in gold foil on the front and "1 of 1" on the back.
Is this legit? Having trouble finding any good info on this set. Thanks!

not 100% sure if that is what i was thinking or not, going off memory (and that can be scary). i know they did several redemptions that year that were hard to find.

For some reason I have a vague memory there was a 1/1 set for the first person who completed the set. Anyone else remember this or am I misremembering?

I recall an owner of a proof set that sold the set off individually. I am unsure if he received it in a contest or if they were stamped '1 of 1'.

I've only heard of the Registered Exchange set, numbered to 8. Never before have I heard of a 1/1 card. For example, the Registered Exchange sets each had a specified number, signifying which of the 8 registered sets they were. The first set of 8 had "No. 1" stamped on the back, but it wasn't a 1/1, just the 1st of the 8 Registered Exchange sets.

There was absolutely a 1/1. Not put in packs though. I've seen the Manning multiple times. see the link below and read at the very bottom:

Just received a Barry Sanders in a consignment for our auction. Will post a picture, but same thing Proof Set on front and 1 of 1 on back. Were these ever counterfeited?

The proof set was auctioned off in completion for charity in early 1999

very weird for one to randomly show up in this collection which is basically just a guy who bargain shops small local live auctions for resale. Will get pictures up tomorrow.
