Default 1986 Fleer Jordan RC- Future Value

Do you guys see the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card going up further than it has been trending (PSA 10s selling for $15,000+ and last sold for $20k) or do you think they will eventually settle down? There have been a ton graded already but that doesn't seem to factor in current market price trends.

PSA POP report: PSA 8 (6661 graded) PSA 9 (2367 graded) PSA 10 (228)

I think they will keep rising over the years, there is really no erasing that cards value.

The thing with the MJ RC is collectors from all ages and even sports want to own that card. And now that people who grew up idolising Jordan can afford one you see the demand continue to increase with time. When someone in the NBA gets hot and people start to believe he might dethrone MJ for the all time greatest, you start to see MJ RC prices stabilise. But then when people again realise MJ's status will not be replaced by anyone, his prices pick up once again. Personally I see continued upside potential for his fleer RC, especially the rarer ones such as the low pop high grade ones and authentic autos. But even the lower grades ones will see some increases I believe.

Any guesstimates on how many of these cards were made by Fleer? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands? I wonder how many people have hundreds of these stashed away.

Fleer really let the printing presses crank out this first year. Thankfully, many were destroyed over time, and the cards are condition sensitive.

It's the second year Jordan Fleer that is the tough one....but nobody cares.

I've been tracking the sales of PSA 9's for the past 18 months. There have been over 100 sales of PSA 9's since last May. I don't see the card becoming stagnant and should always increase higher than inflation. I'm liking it better than my 401k at the moment

If it keeps rising it's going to get to the point where there are more Jordan RCs available than there are people who can afford them.

It wouldn't surprise me if card holders with intent to sell end up sitting on the cards instead of moving them for real world money because they can't extract blood from the market.

It's absolutely an iconic card, but it's never going to reach a certain point. 10s will be in a league of their own, but that's going to be a much smaller market. 10s aside, depending on the grade, I think they will level out and possibly come down a little, assuming any one trying to sell, is actually serious about making a sale.

It is the Mantle '52 Topps of basketball. Nows the time to get it IMO.

Interesting take. I think the ride the 10's have been on lately has been insane. As they keep pushing that $20k barrier they become more and more targeted by the truly elite, deep pocketed collector. How far can these guys go to attain a gem MJ? Who knows.

While there a certainly more guys in that category than there are available centered copies in 10 holders, the majority of collectors looking to snatch up a piece of their childhood will be more in the range of a 8-9. I think $20k is a magic number that rules out a lot of collectors. You can still find a near perfect 9 for say $4-5k. I personally don't see the 9 rocketing from there unless the 10 sees another spike. As the big boy goes, the little brother grades will follow to an extent.

I do agree. The 52 Mantle has EXPLODED in recent years in all grades and has in effect pulled along all other Mantle cards. I see the same happening for MJ. I personally thing the 87-88 Fleer and 86 Sticker in PSA 9-10 are currently undervalued. Hopefully those stay that way since I don't have either

POP reports are pretty inaccurate in general...especially with 86 fleer Jordan's where tons of them are cracked and resubmitted many times over.
I would imagine conservatively an error rate of 25 percent in terms of how many PSA9's, BGS 9.5's, PSA8's, etc... actually exist.

For example, there are only 50 LeBron topps chrome gold rc's in existence..
As of a couple years ago when I last checked, there were about 55 or 60 graded between both companies.

Very good and understated point about any elite card in high demand.

I see high Grade 10s and 9.5s increasing and holding value over time.

But, i think we'll eventually start to see a slip in 8s and below as time moves on. Right now is prime buying power for people who grew up watching Jordan. As that generation ages and is no longer hunting for the stars of their youth the market will contract a bit.

I was just talking to a "kid" (16) this past week at a shop an we actually talked vintage. He said he'd take a Kobe or Lebron high end card over a Jordan RC any day. And to be honest this shouldn't really surprise anyone - it's who he's grown up watching.

Agree with everything you said except i don't see the lower grades slipping as much as leveling off in the next 5-10 years. Still a number of years left for the Jordan generation to love buying these.

Safest bet in the game as long as MJ doesn't do anything stupid irl to tarnish his legacy.

Kids of all ages are still buying up Jordan shoes and clothing, so that will help continue his popularity for those that never saw him play.

Haha. I'm so pessimistic that I feel if I put a ton of money into High grade Jordan RC's some Bill Cosby crap will come out about him and they will tank.

Lol, I would to...but I bet his autographs and ugly sweater memorabilia prices have taken a dive. We got any Cosby collectors to back this?

Barring a full on OJ or Cosby mess I think MJ is safe. He may even be able to weather a Cosby situation...

I never saw Babe Ruth play. I would love his autograph in a Yankees uniform

It was one of my first basketball cards. Something about the Bulls font and the image. Just love that card.
