I know that mediocre players don't really have very valuable cards, but what about really awful players like Ryan Leaf or busts like the Boz? Are there any collectors out there who look for historically bad players?

Major? Not really, but the right players still sell very well for specific cards due to college collectors and being rare items.

Yeah I could see a Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson card from Miami going for a few pretty pennies. I have a Kliff Kingsbury rookie auto which I've seen go for close to $30 on eBay. I think you're right though, it would depend on what they did after they played.

There are some iconic cards that bring high dollars for some of the biggest busts..... Leaf 98 credentials is probably a 50 plus dollar card, Jamarcus Russell RPA's numbered low still sell for good money to name a few examples. A combination of a big name along with a sought after set = money (not huge money but 50 or more bucks for guys that truly suck is pretty good)

I think there is a market for some of these guys for numerous reasons (college, after career stuff, or simply because they were such a bust) but they don't sell for big $$. I was going to pick up a cheap JaMarcus Russell auto just because of how much of a bust he was but gave up after being outbid on a few because I wasn't going to spend much money on a guy like that.

College career, what they did after football, prestegious cards (Ryan Leaf Contenders rc), rarity, and someone may be trying to complete a whole set.
The thing with busts and sets is the busts are usually top picks so they were short printed to begin with and harder to get as the years go by. Bosworth and Tebow are probably the best selling busts consistantly.

I have a strange feeling this doesn't involve trading cards...

Boz was hurt. It limited his play and ended his career. Aside from getting run over by Earl or Bo he was a player.

Boz is actually a pretty decent seller as there are quite a few Sooners collectors

I'm still trying to get some 90's parallels of certain busts. Some of them have been quite pesky and have eluded me.

Agree with others, some will get a good following because of College - Boz..
Others like Tebow, Vince Young will continue to at least sell to Heisman collectors. There will always be some market for those. I don't see any real market for the Jamarcus Russell types. No college awards to speak of. Maybe some LSU super collectors. |

Heisman winners always have a market. So do guys whose college fan bases are diehard about their players - especially schools with no pro team in the state (Arkansas, Alabama, West Virginia, Nebraska, etc.).
Guys whose career was ended by a major injury get some sentimental following too (maybe because some fans don't regard them as busts).

Everyone laughed their a**es off when Denver took him in the 1st because he's a QB who can't throw a football.

I'd call him a bust...He was a 1st rounder and most busts struggled with immaturity or being on a team with no O-line.. not Tebow - it's hard to find a qb with worse stats/throwing motion. He had heart and was a gamer/never gave up but that doesnt make him good. That poor Denver D would keep the entire games close so Tebow could finally throw 1 decent pass at the end of a game to win. Only somewhat decent game he had was vs the Steelers in the playoffs but even Ryan Leaf had a 300+ yard game with 3 TDS. After Denver he looked beyond horrible in his chances with the Jets and couldnt even get a roster spot with that group of horrible QBs.

So taking over a horrible team and getting them a playoff win in your first year is a bust? The only reason he's even considered a bust is because the Broncos wouldn't invest the time needed into a QB who finally made their team relevant again. Kyle Orton wasn't going to do anything with them, but Tebow made them successful and popular.
What has the mighty Peyton Manning done since? Set multiple personal records and help cement Denver's legacy of Super Bowl blowout losses (they now own 3 of the 5 worst blowouts in Super Bowl history). Now, I'm not saying Tebow is the greatest QB around, but he was never given a fair shot. He had a team moving in the right direction and was winning and they gave up on him. The Jets chose to stick with Sanchez. Look how that turned out. And then the Patriots. You really thought the Patriots would keep him around? Hell, most people don't even know who the Patriots have as a backup QB without having to check their roster online, so they kept someone who would end up being cheaper in the long run. IMO, Tebow is FAR from being a bust. |

Are you saying as a coach GM you would rather have Tebow when the chance of getting Peyton Manning comes along? Yes he lost in the superbowl but he also set a record for most offensive points scored in a season. Imagine you are a stud WR and you had to play with Tebow as your QB..Decker probably would have never gotten a big FA deal because no one would even know who he was. D. Thomas, J. Thomas ,Welker, and Sanders deserved much better. As for Denver getting blown out in the SB remember Von Miller didnt play plus Denver got rid of Elvis Dumervil. D wins not just a QB. No one wants to give the D credit. As for blowouts remember Tebow couldnt do squat against the patriots in his playoff loss completing 34% of his passes and only throwing 136 yards, getting sacked 5 times, fumbling and losing 45-10 As for QBs taking teams to the playoffs either in their 1st season or early in their careers (tebow was technically in his 2nd season) then being labeled as a bust it happends quite a bit.. RG3, Mark Sanchez back to back, Christian Ponder had a 10-6 record his 2nd year, Shaun King, Tavaris Jackson, etc We will never know if Tebow would have won with Denver but he only went 7-4 with a playoff win then a horrible playoff loss.. he wasnt lighting it up only completing 45% of his passes that season.. Manning is 45-12 starting for Denver and took them to the SB. Huge difference. Manning was the much better choice for winning. Bottom line on Tebow is a hyped heisman 1st round pick, can't hit a barn door at point blank range completing less than 50% of his passes, the worst looking passes that I have seen a QB throw in my 28 years of watching the NFL, not willing to change positions to make a team, out of the NFL after 3 seasons despite trying his hardest to get on any roster. To me thats bust. He is so bad even the Jaguars didn't want him and they know he would sell tons of tickets since hes very popular in Florida.

I feel like if Manziel eventually busts out of the league, he still should sell well because of how well loved he seems to be in College Station.

Both loses too...if not for a bigger scrub manning would have no ring. Cam Newton is basically Tim Tebow. ..newton sucks at qb but is given every chance to succeed. Carolina is undefeated but they are horrible and we all know will choke big in the playoffs. If Tebow was black he would still be playing in the NFL...100%.. Teams prefer losing the "right" way than winning the wrong way. NFL is full of #@#@#@#@ qbs |
