Default The Pistons Want To Move Back To Detroit

The Pistons haven’t called Detroit proper their home since 1978. Owner Tom Gores would like to change that. Last week, Gores hired agent Arn Tellem in an executive role, and Tellem’s first project will be exploring the team’s options to return to downtown.

“We will put Arn in charge of helping us analyze how we can talk to the other business leaders,” Gores said. “We are going to charter Arn to study that (moving downtown). It will be one of his first things.”

The Pistons have two viable options. They can move into the new Red Wings arena, which is scheduled to open in 2017, and share it with Olympia Entertainment. There is also a Hail Mary option to tear down the half-built Wayne County Jail and build an arena in conjunction with Quicken Loans chairman Dan Gilbert.

Either way, the Pistons would be allying with one of the two billionaires who have been given free rein—and hundreds of millions in taxpayer money and subsidies—to spearhead downtown’s rebirth. It’s a plan many Detroiters don’t like, and will be actively hurt by. But as these things usually go, they get no say in the matter.

What's crazy, Dan Gilbert would have interest in two NBA franchises in the same division.

Pistons have bigger problems to worry about than deciding to play in Auburn Hills or Detroit or Saginaw.....they've been one of the worst teams in the NBA over the past 5-6 seasons

So they leave Auburn Hills, which then vacates the Palace to nothing but concert events. Much like the Silverdome, it will be ruins in a few years too. Granted there's more holding Auburn Hills up, but that will no doubt have a huge impact on that area (which to me the sporting/events helps supplement what the shopping/mall doesnt).

But depending on "where" downtown, some of that area could be napalmed, bulldozed, and regrowth started from zero and would still take more than a basketball team to regrow the area before it was overtaken again with less than honorable activities and blight.

Coming from a Bucks fan who's team has been terrible since in the mid 80's.

Well the Palace still owns DTE that's 10 miles north. And they have rights to put on shows at Meadowbrook as well.

So I'm not exactly sure how that will play out, but that's a lot of jobs. There is no way they would be taking jobs away from Olympia.

You're right about the Palace though, as soon as concerts and the pistons go away, that stadium will have the same fate as the Silverdome.

Hard to believe that team was so dominant. Definition of teamwork and grit.

But yeah...Detroit. Don't know why anyone would purposely WANT to be there except Eminem and the cast of Hardcore Pawn.

Has nothing to do with the Bucks, so why bring them up?

Was my statement about the Pistons being one of the worst teams in recent years not true?

There really can't be much, if any, excitement for this organization from a fans' prospective

Look at the team they beat.

4 HOF players and the GOAT coach.

vs.

0 HOF players and a HOF coach.

If the news is true, you better buy up some houses around that area.

Honestly loved to watch them play...I could care less about the big names, I just like seeing teams with heart.

Just our luck 'Sheed happened to be going through his 'biggest parasite on a team ever' phase when he was with Portland, but glad to see him eventually find the right fit and put it all together.

You'd be surprised how much money is in and around Detroit, I know I was. Surprisingly, a lot of the surrounding suburbs are way more ritzy then anywhere in the Seattle area.

I would, but then I realize I'd actually have to physically drive through detroit to see the house. One of those few times where you stop to value the meaning of your own life.

Detroit was actually named as one of the cities along with places like Ann Arbor, Dallas, etc. where in a basic sense there are more buyers in the market than sellers, Detroit is experiencing a resurgence due to Mike Duggan and Governor Snyder and all the effort in which they are putting forth to re-build a once great American city.

Really? Andre Drummond one of the best young players in the league isn't exciting, this team will be in the playoffs, whether it's this next season or the one after, the Pistons will be back soon and i'd guarantee it.

I think it would be outstanding for the city of Detroit, as well as the metro region, for all four major sports teams to play within walking distance of one another.

If Gores doesn't want to go in with the Ilitch family, he could go for the scrapped Wayne County Jail spot or look at the area just north of 75, Comerica and Ford Field where they recently tore down the old Brewster Douglass project.
