An interesting interview with Star Wars actor John Morton makes a good case that the Star Wars Rebels show will provide a lead in to Star Wars Episode 7 the same way that those numerous books that were recently announced would fill in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. We are fairly certain that the Inquisitors will be playing a big part in Episode 7 - so wouldn't it make sense that some other pieces of Rebels will also make it into the movie?
Kanan the Last Padawan #1's could be a healthy pick up if this proves to be true.

The new film takes place 30 years after Jedi.
The article you link mentions that Max Von Sydow(an older man) is cast in Episode 7 but no one knows who he is playing. Speculation is that he plays Kanan, who is now elderly, and he recognizes a lightsaber amongst some scrap metal and it puts the movie in motion. If it's true, it will tie the Rebels series to Episode 7.

There's a reason they put out a new comic with Kanan as the main character. I'm just speculating here, but they don't market new characters like this for no reason. Have any other Star Wars people outside of Darth and Leia had new series lately? Makes me think he may be tied into the new movie somehow, but I could be way off base.
