Default Godzilla 2014- Possible Spoiler

Not sure if there's a section for this but just wanted to share a short review of the new Godzilla movie.

Took my sons to see the movie, well maybe they took dad to see the movie because I was probably more excited to see it than they were.

If you are a fan of Godzilla movies this is an absolutely MUST to see.

This is the way you remake a movie from the 70's / 80's with current Technology.

This is Classic Godzilla in 2014! The King of Monsters defending the Earth.

Saw it in IMAX 3D and was blown away...

Wont ruin it all, but the ending brought me back to my childhood when I used to watch the end and wave goodbye to the big fella! Just as classic as it could get.......

I liked it a lot. They did extremely well with all the CG and special effects.

My only complaint is below in white:
I really didn't like seeing Bryan Cranston dying. He was one of the big reasons I went to watch this movie, so I was hoping his outcome wasn't real. So I was disappointed about that, but other than I thoroughly enjoyed it

I saw it yesterday and thought it was ok. Not the best but definitely not bad.

it's cool they put a different spin on the Godzilla story after all these years but the story and the ending was a kinda weak.

CGI/Sound/visuals were great no doubt about it.

The effects were amazing agreed, but I thought the ending was one of the best parts of the movie. Without revealing too much, I thought that it was a classic Godzilla ending, I never expected it to end like that with such a vintage feel to it... like I said it brought me back 30 years in a split second.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen............husband and wife in Godzilla, brother and sister in Avengers Age of Ultron. That I find a bit odd.

I was never a huge Godzilla fan but loved the movie.

Godzilla (1999 starring Matthew Broderick) was the first movie I ever saw without my parents. I can still remember the hushed anticipation as I sat in the darkened theater with my middle school. Then, all i can remember, is the wave after wave of laughter we piled on the movie as the plot became increasingly more ridiculous. I had grown up watching all of the Toho Series Godzilla movies, but all I could do that night was crack joke after joke. Then, for the next 15 years, I lived with the scars of the abomination. So you can imagine, it was with nervous trepidation that I purchased tickets for my wife and I to see Godzilla 2014 on the night of its premiere.

After seeing the movie, I was both relieved and disappointed. Had THIS movie come out in 1999, my tiny adolescent brain would have imploded with awesomeness. As a 27 year old who had already sat through one disappointment, I emerged more grateful/relieved than anything else. Godzilla 2014 is a solid film all around. And for that I am thankful to Gareth Edwards.

What it is not, however, is a brilliant opening act to a franchises or a monolithic stand-alone in cinema history - though it had the chance to be both. Several elements of the film were brilliant, from the early demise of Bryan Cranston to the cinematography. (Though the single most beautiful shot, the paratrooper flares between the skyscrapers, was shown in the trailer but cut from the film.) However, it was the utilization of Godzilla himself that most disappointed me:

Now, Godzilla, in the original film, was a transcendental metaphor for both the atomic bomb and the forces of nature - far beyond the control of man and any "right" or "wrong" decisions he might make. Godzilla, at least in his debut, is meant to be a force of nature that sweeps in from out to sea, destroys several cities, and then recedes with the tide to the most remote reaches of planet earth. He is neither hero nor villain nor antihero - he is so large that he transcends morality. He is a force that leaves mankind so shaken to its core that all it can do is marvel at its own frailty.

Only AFTER having established the sheer awesomeness of Godzilla, is the film series allowed to explore Godzilla as an antihero or a force of balancing nature. This is the grave mistake that Gareth Edward's Godzilla made. It brought him forth from the seas, not as a godlike force, but as a weakened protagonist. Yes, it made us root for Godzilla from the beginning and look forward to his every appearance with a sense of anticipation, but it completely ruined Godzilla as the character he was meant to be.

If Gareth Edwards had really done his homework, Godzilla 2014 would have featured Godzilla and Godzilla alone. It would have made him the antagonist. Humanity would have feared and reviled him. The sheer enormity and wantonness of his destruction would have left the audience cheering for the military and the combined ingenuity of man to thwart him. Then, only after having fully bested the endeavors of man, would Godzilla have receded into the seas and left the audience with the taught anticipation that leads to the best of sequels. Only after having shown that Godzilla is beyond the control AND destruction of man, should the director have brought him forth as a balancing force of nature to do battle with another gigantic monster. Whereas the traditional hero arc follows as Origin > Self-Doubt > Final Victory, Godzilla's arc should have been Villain > Anti-Hero > Messiah. This, right here, is the greatest failing of the otherwise wonderful Godzilla 2014.

Agree with a lot of what you say Frenzy, but what if there is no sequel?

What if there is a prequel in the works? They alluded to the fact that they saw Godzilla as a "villain" as they tried to destroy it in 1954, so maybe they release a prequel? Not sure, just a thought.

I distinctly remember the flare scene in the movie. I have to go back and watch the trailer, so maybe it was different? I'll look.

At least, I'm 99% it wasn't in the film. Will be seeing it a second time this next weekend once my final grades are in for my classes. Glad to meet another Godzilla enthusiast!

That part from the trailer is in the movie, just extended. It shows the fighting going on between the monsters after where the trailer cuts

What if the 1999 Matthew Broderick movie was the first movie and this new one was the sequel?

The doctor in the new movie said last time this happened was 15 years ago and at the end of the 1999 movie there was a single egg ready to hatch which 15 years later could be the Godzilla in the new movie.

What's next, a Gamera remake? 'Gamera is friend to all children!' These monster movies were better in the 60's with a guy in a rubber suit crushing tank and building models.

Went to see it today, enjoyed it, and thought it was like the originals with better graphics/acting(no English voice-overs!)
