Default Junk Era Rookies

Hello everyone,

So the Ken Griffey Jr. thread got me wondering... For other rookies of that era, what are the most desirable cards? Is Upper Deck the way to go for 1989+? I realize Topps/Bowman chrome are the choice today, but I'd like to grab some rookies of my all time favorites, a lot who debuted in the 80s-90s.

Thanks for the help!

I believe the Leaf rookie card of Frank Thomas is his most wanted (well besides the Topps No Name On Front, but good luck buying that )

The PSA Set Registries might be interesting to check out. Here are the target RCs that PSA set collectors chase for current Hall of Famers and potential Hall of Famers.

Its different each year, sometimes because the player doesn't have a rookie card in each brand. If they have a rookie in the set, I'd say the best would be:

1989 - Upper Deck
1990 - Leaf
1991 - Stadium Club or Bowman
1992 - Bowman or Fleer Update (Fleer Update doesn't have many rookies, but the ones it does have are definitely the best for that rookie)
1993 - SP
1994 - SP
1995 and on - Usually Bowman Products

But some notable exceptions, because they are not in the above sets, would be:
Bernie Williams - 1990 Bowman (I guess... no premium brand)
Pedro Martinez - 1991 Upper Deck Final Edition
Jason Varitek & Nomar Garciaparra - 1992 Topps Traded
Andy Pettitte - 1993 Bowman
Todd Helton - 1993 Topps Traded
Jorge Posada - 1994 Bowman or Bowman's Best

I'm sure there are plenty of other examples I'm forgetting. And this also assumes you mean basic rookie cards. If you start getting into parallels (Topps Tiffany, Topps Desert Shield, Bowman's Best Refractors, etc) that changes things a bit in 1991 and especially 1994 and on.

bowman is mariano rivera's top rookie, while jeter and a-rod's is SP. i'd say it simply varies from player to player

On guys like Mo and Jeter, should you pick up now or wait until they retire? Or does it really matter?
