So I got this old coin in fourth grade as part of a history project where the teacher got a unearthed bag of old roman coins, some of the coins were not even distinguishable. We soaked them in olive oil and then cleaned them with tooth picks, it was pretty cool in fourth grade lol. Anyway, I was curious if anybody recognized this coin or could point me in the right direction as to where to look. Thanks

Yah either way, you need to figure out some of the characters around the edges on this or the other side. Otherwise, you are going for blind luck at someone recognizing the face of that ruler.

I can make out more of a face in your hardwood floor than on that coin.
I doubt you'll find too many pre-Revolution coin experts here (I know there are some coin collectors, but they mostly specialize in post-Civil War stuff). I'm sure there are some websites you could check that would help you out. |

It looks like what is known as a "Roman Probus". The problem is that there are literally 100's of variations. There are some good websites out there to help identify it, but I can't remember them. Just do a search for Roman Probus and check a few out. A lot of the identification has to do with the obverse of the coin.

Go to TreasureNet and look there. There are European metal detectorists that can tell you in a second exactly what you have.
Most bronze roman coins are common and not worth much.

Thanks guys I appreciate it, as for the back of the coin it is in even worse condition, so not even worth posting.
