I'd like to gauge interest in an open source sports card database. Sure, Beckett pretty much has the market cornered and you can peruse their data, but they charge a lot of money to be able to do anything with that data. Tuff Stuff was around for awhile, but they seem to have fallen into the abyss. What I'm proposing is a card database that is updated by the community and can be licensed and used by anyone (for free). Seeing as we may not have to reinvent the wheel if previous years' data exists elsewhere, it would be up to the community to add new sets/descriptions/etc... going forward. I could even see tying sales and analytics into the mix for instant market analysis and, possibly, a marketplace. This is a lot of work for one person, but if several members of the community donated time to the cause, I would volunteer my time doing programming (I've been developing software/databases for 10+ years and I ran a card shop a few years back). Thoughts? Questions?

I would love a new site, and would be willing to help but I know nothing of computer programming, data entry I could do. I'e checked out a lot of other sites with this same aim but haven;t really found one that quite fit and was easy(ier) to use.

We most definitely need data entry people. Since Tracy Hackler posts checklists on his Panini blog, we could probably just manipulate those for starters. We can either go the route of uploading spreadsheets or copying/pasting spreadsheet data into an Excel-like interface. I'll probably have both. Thanks for the interest. Let's see if anyone else is in.

This is an interesting site. Anyone know if the developers are members of this board?

The Zistle devs are open to collaborations. I think everyone here should check the site out and provide feedback on what they like or don't like about it. I've got some ideas about how it may be of better use to the B/S/T community, but I like what they've done so far.

Anyway, overall it's pretty good, just ignore the alleged values because from what I can tell they are not even remotely close (you'll see random commons from the late 80's listed with a value over $10). I dont use it for the values but more as a way to keep tabs on what I have in my collection. I've thought about asking if I can be a mod of sorts so I can actually fix things instead of submitting them to be fixed but I honestly dont think I spend enough time there. I do have the massive beckett book from last year sitting on the shelf, mostly as a reference since I know the 'values' listed in that are junk. |
