Default Shame On Me

First off i never ever buy retail. Always have been a hobby card buyer at blowout or seldomly at lcs. But today after being stuck in traffic for about 2 hours, my sister had to go to the bathroom on the way home. So we stopped into the first Store we saw and it was a traget. So as i waited for her to come out, I started browsing in the card section. With all these talks about pack searcher and all. i decided to pick up a couple of packs. mildly looking to see if there were any packs that seemed off. This is the first time i have ever chose packs like this, so I didnt even know where and how to start looking..until i cam across this pack that was a little thicker than the rest. so I picked up 1 pack of topps treasury. When i go in the car i opened the pack and pulled a Beasley ref rc and a Brandon Rush rookie auto 15/25. Its funny. I feel good and bad at the same time.

Shame on you To be honest, While I dont condone pack searching I think we're all guilty of it. We all know this hobby is really hard to make any money on, and in most cases have lost $$ at one point or another..but the card companies know this and still produce thick packs, thin packs...they need to make them all weigh the same, feel the same, look the same. I dont care even if the super patch cards are redemptions (as long as they make them, and honor the redemptions)...just even the playing field for all and you eliminate the cheating...until them first one wins

ive got no problem with that either who wouldn't pick that pack. Granted I would have maybe bought 1 more pack to feel better about myself but I see nothing wrong with what you did. The only time I ever did something like this was back in 2000 with Bowman's Best baseball retail. I was reading the odds on the back of the pack and felt the topps sticker on that pack so I went ahead and bought it along with one more pack and it had a Carlos Beltran jersey which back in those days were impossible to pulls. Now I would have been a fool to put that pack back but why did Topps have the hits that year as the very last card in the pack with the stickers?

companies need to make it less obvious, Masterpieces would have 1 or 2 huuuge packs in the target boxes. You'd be dumb not to take it.

Those thicker packs are always calling for attention. I havn't seen bent cards yet, but i've noticed some thicker packs that have been opened already, either top or bottom, or slits cut in sides. Not a big fan!

I remember at a Wal-mart in 2004 every pack of Prestige football had a slit cut in the top and there was about 4 boxes worth of them on the shelves. All of the relics had been pulled but I figured wth if they are going to sit on the shelves like that nobody is going to buy them so I went and looked at the rookie in every pack and decided why not buy all the Big Ben's Roy Williams and Kellen Winslows.. Well atleast 1 of them panned out.. lol.. This was also before the shortprint list was annoucned..

my favorite was when I was at Models and they had some 2005 sweet spot packs. All the packs were skinny except for the one pack that was 2x bigger lol. I pulled a travis Hafner sweet spot auto. At the time travis hafner was a machine. I cant blame people for taking the thick packs if companies aren't going to try and prevent them.

just check for those single packs that come in a cardboard holder with a clear plastic front. You will usually see indents on the packaging where people squeeze and manipulate.

Lucky for me theres not too many collectors, so i get first dibs at the products. i don't search the packs, but you know when you see a thicker one that your odds are better. targets are the worst picked thru in my opinion. nothing wrong with what u did, you were just being a smart shopper.

I know growing up I would always try and see which bag of candy had more in it than another bag.

There's a big difference between feeling and bending packs trying to find hits and noticing which packs are thicker. There are many times, especially in hobby packs, where you pick a thicker pack and it has nothing good in it, only to find out the thinner pack has the card you want. Plus, finding the auto is a bit harder I think. But yeah...I really see no problem in buying the thicker pack. That's a calculated risk vs. Pack searching.

First off, I wouldn't have done it. Not saying you were wrong, but I would've felt a bit guilty. Haven't they tried to combat these pack searchers with decoy cards, right? Another question I got is, if you're there searching packs long enough at a big chain store wouldn't their cameras and security catch you? I take it that these antics wouldn't really be possible at a hobby shop. I guess the question is... do you feel less guilty about it just because you're doing it from the major stores as opposed to your little local hobby shop guy?

Big store just care that you spend money. They aren't going to buy anything back from you if you get a big hit like a shop owner would. And their sales goals probably don't hinge around how many loose packs of 2008 Prestige football are sold.
