Default Wax

Been noticing the uptick for awhile but vintage wax say pre 87 seems to be moving up the 81-86 wax more so than true vintage thats been nuts for awhile.....

even stuff like 87 Leaf, opc are getting into the $500-700 range.
2 years ago i was buying 81 fleer/donruss for $125 now its $around $300 even stuff like 81 topps is almost a grand....83 fleer was in the $200 range now $450 even 84 thats always been cheaper is going way up...i get it drys up as time goes on but this spike seems to either have happened fast or i haven't been paying attention lately.

Insane prices... Probably a lot of uneducated modern collectors thinking there are PSA 10 candidates in the packs because it is pack fresh. I would like to have a display piece, but not at that price point. Supply vs demand always wins and supply will continue to dwindle with people like Geoff Wilson. That 1970 Topps pack he opened shows he much he doesn't know. He didn't know those cards came in series and thought he could get every player.

I've sold alot of my collection of sealed cases and bbce wrapped fasc stuff i sent in. The amount of uneducated buyers is INSANE. They will file claims with ebay when cards are off centered and if they hit multiple duplicates etc. Alot of goons that dont understand why 10s are worth so much.

Problem is there is so many people paying insane prices anyone with common sense is priced out.who in their right mind is paying $1000 for 81 topps?hell 85 topps is approaching $800 its out of control imo...as a wax collector i guess i should be happy all my stuff keeps going up......but part of me misses the days of sub $100 a box for 81-85.....times changes.

Very true. Opening a box of 1981 is literally the same as light the money on fire. The new kids dont get it and then want a refund afterward.

I got back into collecting late 2017/early 2018. I bought a ton of mid-90’s boxes for $10-$30/box just for nostalgia rips. I opened a bunch, but still sitting on 20-30 boxes. A good chunk of them (mostly the basketball) have recent sales between $100-$200. I understand as time goes on the boxes get more scarce, but a 92-93 Upper Deck low # box selling for close to $200 baffles me. There’s no real chase cards in that box & sets are readily accessible for next to nothing.

Part of this has to be the fact that people buying just do not understand or have any real knowledge of older stuff in how bad the QC was in that period.i see sellers with the PSA 10 $$$$ in the titles like if you buy it you have hit gold....

a little strange to me someone would buy something at that price and have no clue of what they are buying......or maybe they like to gamble?there must be enough people willing to do it for prices to be up so much...are there really that many stupid people?you know they open the stuff, just look on ebay at the amount of "empty wax box" listings.

Trust me, they open it minutes after delivery. Some dont even know who or what bbce is. They just watch their influencer hype videos and buy stuff. The influencers will open, for example and 89 Upper Deck box. Say they pull 2 Griffeys. They will hype it up saying they could have 10k if they grade out such a way. Gets people buying and then they are angry when the centering is off when they do hit a griffey. They will say you should stand by what you sell and factory QC is the sellers problem. It's not a good scenario.

I have been saying for years that mystery boxes are driving the market on vintage and junkwax era stuff. I am not talking about the singles mystery boxes, I am talking about the mystery boxes where you get 10 or 15 random packs with a few chaser packs mixed in like the early and mid 80's stuff.

That's actually a great point,Ive seen videos on those many times makes sense why junk wax would increase those boxes are full of junk wax.it seems inconceivable junk wax could ever dry up...but your explanation is as good as Ive seen on why.

All i could think of while reading your post was jeoff wilson opening vintage wax and not even knowing how to pronounce the players names.must be his followers buying the stuff.
