GameStop is closing up shops!

Coincidentally, a buddy of mine (who runs a GameStop in the Southeast) and I were just recently talking. He was telling me that Gamestop has been closing up stores left and right (about a dozen in his region). I was checking my GMail and I literally received an email saying: 'One of your local GameStop stores is CLOSING.'
It takes effective immediately 1/8/26. Now I have two orders being shipped out tomorrow (they ship PSA on Monday), so they should be fine.

My current orders are being transferred to the next closest one.

Just thought this was an interesting topic.

That is a shocking number of stores in the San Francisco Bay Area that are being closed.

They closed most stores near me last year. I have a few by my, but a couple of them won't deal in grading. I don't understand how a company supposedly making so much money keeps closing up shops.

LOL the easiest gamestop to visit is closing by me. My options now are 45 mins west, 45 mins south, or 30 mins, battle for parking and walk 10-15 minutes inside a mall

I wonder how PSA factors into all of the Gamestop realignment? Gamestop revenue has been in decline year over year. I think they just had a profitable quarter this year for the first time in awhile. The used game resale business is going the way of Blockbuster. I am sure they are trying to figure out the correct storefront level for a collectibles focus would look like.

yep, I would let all of this settle in. It also depends on if you have other stores in your region. You could easily get your cards delivered to a store that is an hour drive or more.

The Gamestop location at the Southland Mall in Hayward isn't on the list, either.

I'm guessing the rent is cheaper at malls with poor foot traffic, and it's harder to steal from them as well -- you can't ram a vehicle into them, for example: https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/loca...estop/3746128/

Oh man, I haven’t seen an Orange Julius in over 35 years. I guess they must have left the Eastern US but stayed open out West maybe?

I went to Tanforan for the Orange Julius (for nostalgic purposes) and that's when I saw how utterly dead that mall was, and did a double-take when I saw the GameStop among the nearly all empty storefronts. Also, it didn't live up to the nostalgic. So much so, I googled a recipe to make the classic drink at home. After a few tweaks, this one fit the bill for me and is my go-to recipe:

* 2-1/4 cups of orange juice
* 1/4 cup water
* 2 large egg whites
* 1/4 whole milk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 3/4 cup granulated sugar
* 2 cups ice

Blend it all when you're feeling nostalgic.

Fanatics has a minority ownership in the store Lids, and handles Lids' physical retail operations. So if Fanatics ever got into the grading game, this would be the perfect store/chain to mimic the PSA/GameStop partnership when selling their own slabs or accepting grading submissions. But who knows, maybe Fanatics doesn't want to get into grading. We'll see.

Probably has to do with older malls, 30 year leases and inflation not causing rent to go up since the lease is so long.

Lenox Mall in Atlanta is on this list and a Gamestop being in there sticks out very much since its a very end high end store mall. So the rent there probably has to be astronomical (i assume this store is on the bottom floor of four)

The GS at the Oakridge Mall in San Jose is apparently one of the largest PSA graders in the company.
