Default Is the National Safe??

Haven’t been to the National in Chicago before. Is it a safe venue? Have there been any issues in the past? Trying to determine how many high dollar cards I bring with me to sell.

Yes, I have been there about 10 times, have never felt unsafe in Rosemont or at the venue at all. Also in terms of security for this event specifically, Jeremy Lee interviewed the promoters about a week ago and they said security is going to be increased this year compared to last and increased hours they will be there (I assume to cover the trade nights)

The show is in Rosemont which while near O'Hare is actually quite far from the more urban areas of Chicago. I have been to a dozen Nationals and never felt unsafe.

That said, use common sense. Don't advertise yourself as a target, don't carry valuables out in the open, don't leave your stuff unattended, don't wander off on your own after dark, etc.

It's not really Chicago, it's in Rosemont which is a far cry from the urban areas of Chicago. Of all of the venues the NSCC rotates to, its by far the safest IMO.

As long as you are not rolling thru the south side of Chicago yelling out hey I got a lot of expensive trading cards on me you will be ok.

The show area is super safe. Chicago is very unsafe. Two different questions. There is the answer to both.
Our last concierge told us to drive by one spot without stopping and take pictures. Pass the red lights and stop signs just keep moving. Obviously we passed on seeing the "Shameless" house.

Dramatic over-generalization.

When you're paranoid like me, everywhere is unsafe. I'm half kidding, though it makes good sense to always stay alert and trust your gut. If I remember correctly, last year in Cleveland a dealer had a large amount of cash taken from his vehicle. I feel bad for the guy but there's a lesson there.

Hope everyone has a good time, stays safe and look out for each other.

Anyway, here's what I found....

From the interwebs:

The crime rate in Rosemont, IL is significantly higher than the national average. Here are some key statistics:

The crime rate is 52.53 per 1,000 residents, ranking it in the 8th percentile for safety, meaning it is safer than 8% of cities but less safe than 92%.

In 2023, the crime rate was 675, which is 2.8 times greater than the U.S. average.

Rosemont has a total crime rate of 9262 per 100,000 residents, surpassing the national average by 298.49%.

Despite these statistics, local insights suggest that residents generally consider Rosemont a safe place to live.

These figures indicate that while Rosemont has a higher crime rate, there are neighborhoods within the city that may be safer than others.

Rosemont per-resident rates are skewed a ton given only 3,700 people actually live there but tens of thousands flock to the town for conventions every weekend. Large outlet mall, restaurants, etc. means the crimes per resident stat is much, much higher. It's a safe town.

Have you been to Chicago? It definitely has the standard big city issues, but I feel safer here than walking the streets of Birmingham AL

Its safe as its not likely you randomly get mugged or jumped, especially during daylight. Unsafe in the respect of leaving your Car Unlocked or counting cash in the open.

If you are carrying thousands of dollars worth of cards, you should always worry about things about safety whether you are in Rosemont area of Chicago, Florida, or your local mall. Especially at night
