Default Stuck in an era syndrome

I’m 48. Peak collecting years were 85-90. I know more about 85-90 baseball and football than most. Don’t know #@#@#@#@ about the 90s. Picked the hobby back up around 2006. Think modern is a bubble. So I’m stuck in the 80s. Kinda like music. Grunge/hendrix/zepplin. New #@#@#@#@ sucks.

Good. More for me. Burn those 7s and 8s so the 10s have more value.

If you don’t think about cards as an investment, you don’t have to worry about a bubble. Ultra modern can be a lot of fun if you just view it as collecting cards of players you watch on TV every night.

Agree. It’s all about money now and it’s priced kids out. I want to go on record that Pokémon is garbage pail kids bubble on steroids.

Isn't Pokemon like the biggest IP in the world, or something similar? Don't think that's going to fade into obscurity like GPK.

I don't collect pokemon but I have friends that are really into it and it's not like the pokemon card hype (the most recent one) just came out of nowhere. People have been spending millions on PSA 10 charizards for years.

What I’m saying is that it doesn’t have to be about money if you don’t want it to be. Just treat every dollar spent as a sunk cost.

I agree, it is easy to get “stuck in an era.” In nonsports, with the Marvel license switching from UD to Topps it looks like a new era is starting and many collectors (like myself) are somewhat stuck in the UD era (for now).

But I still enjoy collecting and I try to chase some modern stuff as it comes out.

With baseball, I’m having fun chasing down some recent year Topps Real One auto cards. I love the retro-style cards that are signed on-card. It’s the best of both worlds (modern and retro). I actually prefer these new pack inserted autos to an athlete’s signature on an older card for some reason.

Maddux was my favorite player ever until Acuna rocketed to the earth from a doomed planet. There were years where I went to every one of his home starts. Point being, you may be stuck, but you could potentially become unstuck if that's something you're after. There's probably more modern stuff/players you like that you just aren't open to. 85-90 is fun. That's the era I bought my first cards in, but there's only so much variety there.

Completely off topic, but I've been rereading the Walking Dead in the deluxe format, and just today read a letter you had printed in an issue.

The 2025 Topps All Aces / All Kings cards are tremendous. Good players from 85-90 on the checklist too. There are some nice cards out there, you just have to look.

If you want to be old and stubborn, just collect Topps Tiffany from that era and relax.

Yup. The color version they have been doing has been fun. I had letters printed in #23 and #27, but they weren't reprinted in this deluxe version. Too much #@#@#@#@ talking I guess for the current audience.
I'm a zombie on the first episode of the TV show, and Kirkman can't take that away from me!

AI Overview

+9
Grunge music emerged in the mid-1980s, primarily in Seattle, Washington, and surrounding areas. It gained significant mainstream popularity in the early 1990s with the success of bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.
Here's a more detailed look:
Early 1980s:
While the term "grunge" wasn't yet widely used, bands like the Melvins and Green River were laying the groundwork for the sound in the Pacific Northwest.
Mid-1980s:
The scene in Seattle started to solidify with bands like Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and Green River gaining local recognition.
Late 1980s:
The independent label Sub Pop became a focal point for the emerging grunge scene, releasing music by many of these bands.
Early 1990s:
Grunge exploded into the mainstream with the success of Nirvana's "Nevermind" album and the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", which was released in September 1991.
Mid-1990s:
Grunge continued to dominate the music scene with bands like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden achieving widespread popularity.

Yeah, proximity helped. I'd done a few things before that too, so when Kirkman said he had a show I made sure the girl I had working in Extras casting got me on. I said this while the show was running that if you live in GA and hadn't been a zombie on the Walking Dead then you're probably a real A-hole. Tons of people eventually got to be zombies, but there were only so many of us there for the pilot. During filming there were several comic people around. Robert, Charlie etc. I spent half of one of the days just chatting with Andy Lincoln while they were shooting the horse getting eaten scene. It was a super fun experience.

Im a couple years younger than you and collected from 87-92. Came back to the hobby in 2012. My collecting is not really stuck in a era of cards but more so an era of players. I like the players from the 80's and 90's and enjoy buying the original stuff from that era but also like the new stuff being produced of those players I grew up watching. The great thing very few people care about cards produced of a player after they retire so I can collect for cheap.
