Default What would you expect/hope for in this situation?

Was out of town for a night with the gf and went out to a local restaurant. I gave my waiter (who was a very good waiter and working multiple jobs) the bill to pay and after 20 minutes he came back and asked, “You gave me your card right?”. After saying yes, he left and for another 10 minutes and came back saying he couldn’t find my card but he was going to keep looking. He asked if he could take my number down and contact me if he finds it.

Three hours later I call the restaurant and ask if they found my card, which they responded they didn’t, but were still looking for it.

An hour later the waiter messaged me apologizing about the card, said he was still looking for it, and was hoping I had a great night. About 20 minutes later, the manager called me and said he found it. He asked if I wanted to get it or said he could mail it to me. I asked for them to mail it, which he agreed to and then asked me if he should charge the card for dinner. So my question is: would you expect/hope for a percentage off of dinner, and if so, how much of the bill would you think should be taken off?

How the frik did they "lose" your card in the first place?!?

I wouldn't expect a discount, but I would complain to the manager. (what if your card was stolen, etc). I would not want my card put in the mail.

Genuinely surprised they didn’t waive the dinner.

I wouldn't have left the restaurant without my card.

So they lost your card, then the manager called to say they found it and asked if he should charge it for the dinner? That shouldn’t have been the call at all. It should have gone something like this:

I wanted to call and apologize for the incident involving your card. I want to let you know that I have found it and that dinner is on the house. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, how would you like me to get your card returned to you?

If it were busy and the waiter was handling multiple tables, I could see how a card could get lost in the shuffle (or fall out of the bill jacket).

I'd at least expect dinner on the house (still charged for drinks) and if the service was good, I'd still tell them to charge a tip to the card, assuming you weren't inconvenienced other than the phone calls/getting your mail.

% off? That should be a free meal. Also I don’t think I would have left without my card.

Push over, that’s free everything and I’m sure as heck not go to tip the person who lost my card and could be running up porn with it. I’m sure the OP also had so stress about the card not being found, etc

You guys are mean

I would pay for the dinner and be done with it

Do people not have notifications on their cards? No one could spend a penny on any of mine without a text popping up immediately

I would expect nothing
I would hope for a comped meal.
If I owned the establishment I would comp the meal

I would expect to have a comped meal. I mean realistically, I only use 1 card, so if my card is now in the mail and probably going to have to wait 2 days to get it, that is inconvenient

I would have cancelled the card upon leaving without it.

To pay or not to pay the tab then comes later on, if/when they call with news of finding the card.

If it was a regular spot that I like, I'd pay, even offer to pay.

If it was a one & done stop, I wouldn't expect to be charged due to the inconvenience they caused.

I would have called and canceled the card before I ever left the restaurant and expected/demanded the entire meal be on the house
