Default The All-Quarter Century Team

The Atlantic recently published their “All-Quarter Century Team” in an article found here:https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/637...eam-2000-2025/

I thought it would be fun to post my own list here. Don’t @ me if you don’t like it… make your own list! I’m interested in seeing the differences of opinion I’m sure we’ll have. Only stats accrued from the year 2000 and on were counted for this list.

Without further ado, here is my All-Quater Century team:

C: Buster Posey
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Jose Altuve
SS: Francisco Lindor
3B: Miguel Cabrera
OF: Ichiro
OF: Aaron Judge
OF: Barry Bonds
DH: Shohei Ohtani

Bench: David Ortiz
Bench: Yadier Molina
Bench: Alex Rodriguez
Bench: Jim Thome

SP: Justin Verlander
SP: Max Scherzer
SP: Clayton Kershaw
SP: Randy Johnson
SP: Roy Halladay

RP: Mariano Rivera

IL: Mike Trout

I probably wasn’t clear in the OP, but this list only took into account stats from 2000-2025.

Like Pedro - the cut at 2000/2001 certainly hurts when thinking about the time period.

It's too bad the article is hidden behind a paywall.

With the Athletics article, the only egregious player to me was Altuve at 2nd. Utley or Cano are far better choices. Miggy at 3rd is debatable because the bulk of his career is at 1B, but if you were willing to put Miggy at 3rd, you gotta take Jeter out and put A-Rod at SS.

I really struggled with putting Altuve over Cano. I still don’t know if I made the right call…

Good point on Miggy, I just wanted a way to have him and Pujols on the list. As far as Jeter, I didn’t have him as my SS.

Latter not directed at you, just a general statement. I think most of the choices are either clear cut or there are a couple guys where you can't really argue (Posey vs Molina at catcher for instance)

No Mookie? I’d have him trotting out to SS in that lineup over Lindor, and I like Lindor.

Ronnie, Mookie, and Juan were all brutal cuts for me to make.

Maybe I’ll have to make a version 2.0 of this list.

Man this quarter century is lacking when compared to say the previews quarter century 1975-2000….The talent there on the 2nd string would beat the first string talent here….Just sayin

Lindor sticks out like he doesn't belong. Just not that level of player.

Haven't crunched the numbers to see if Jeter 00-09 is better than Lindor these last few years but the fact Jeter's decline phase is relatively close to Lindor's prime years is pretty telling.

I guess I’m supposed to put Jeter there, but I’ve never been super into him. Also, if you compare their stats just for this century, Lindor stacks up strongly against him.

ARod has 3 MVPs & ~90 WAR he is the 3rd baseman unless you are not picking steroid users, then take Bonds off too. Bonds is an admitted doper who failed a drug test in 2003. Same for Ortiz.

ARod has roughly the same number of games at SS and 3B, less than 100, he can go either place, but for 2000 forward, he is 3B. Cabrera is a first baseman. He played the majority of his games there and only 31% at 3B.

C: Buster Posey
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Chase Utley
SS: Francisco Lindor
3B: Alex Rodriguez
RF: Mookie Betts
CF: Mike Trout
LF: Barry Bonds
DH: David Ortiz

Super-utility player: Ben Zobrist

Same pitchers

Edit: Whoops -- meant to put Albert Pujols, not Miggy

I personally have Arod at SS in this scenario leaving Beltre at 3B and Jeter is out. Better overall team anyway you choose to look at it.

MLB. com had their list and you can actually read their article. They had Lindor over Jeter, though it is close.

If you're going with peak season only -- best version of a player -- and not entire performance during the century, here's my list:

C: Buster Posey (2012)
1B: Albert Pujols (2009)
2B: Chase Utley (2008)
SS: Alex Rodriguez (2002)
3B: Adrian Beltre (2004)
RF: Aaron Judge (2022)
CF: Mike Trout (2012)
LF: Barry Bonds (2001)
DH: Shohei Ohtani (2024)

Super-utility player: Ben Zobrist (2009)

Starting Pitchers:
1. Randy Johnson (2001)
2. Pedro Martinez (2000)
3. Jacob deGrom (2018)
4. Justin Verlander (2011)
5. Clayton Kershaw (2015)

Closer: Zach Britton (2016)
