Default Wow — Wright vs Bedard

Am I crazy, or has Shane Wright developed (or is developing) into a better player than….the almighty….Connor Bedard

And what is your rationale for this assessment?

Think you may be crazy - only players in the past 35 years with 40 goals and 70 assists before 20 years old - Bedard and Crosby.

Guys I think Lane Hutson is turning into a better player than Cale Makar. Here's my evidence:

He's trending in the Wright direction.

If Bedard doesn't get moved to the wing in the near future, I think his development may remain messy. Seattle has put Wright in relatively lower pressure situations (mid-6 placement / PP2), and he is also a year further down the development path than Bedard. Bedard still has the higher upside.

Shane Wright is definitely developing but he doesn't do anything great/flashy/Fast. He's just been more physical this year than previous seasons. Most of his goals just come from being infront of the net and catching a rebound. They weren't really great plays just standard hockey.

Bedard can make plays on his own, great speed, crazy talent. Issue with him is overrated and being on a bad team. His career +/- is a -80 while Wright is a +8. Bedard has also played in 53 more games than Wright and is a 1st liner to Wright being a 2nd liner who isn't asked to do much... so tough to make a statistical comparison.

Way down the line I could see Wright moving to the 1st line with some of those youngsters in the Kraken Pipeline who lead their leagues in scoring right now. Maybe they will put together a scoring line. Until then they play balanced lines and none of them really outshine the other. Basically Bedard has all the chance in the world to Shine..while Wright most likely will not so we may never know.

If you want to play the stats comparables game, consider the centers who, in the past 35 years, and like Trevor Zegras, had 23+ Goals and 61+ points, while averaging 2.2+ SOG per game at least twice by age 21:

Mike Modano
Mats Sundin
Eric Lindros
Sidney Crosby
Evgeni Malkin
John Tavares
Sean Monahan
Connor McDavid
Auston Matthews

I get that many of them did far better; however, it doesn't change the fact that Zegras did something that only eight other centers did in 35 seasons. Also, all but one or two already are, or almost assuredly will be, members of the hockey hall of fame.

So Zegras will be amazing too?

Or maybe you think that eight is too many players for it to be remarkable. Okay, in that case consider the only two players to have 75+ goals as teens in the past 35 seasons are Crosby and......Patrik Laine.

I pulled so many Zegras YGs while chasing Caufield, I am hoping for all the best for him!

His YGs are basically free. Best to roll them up and use them for lighting candles and cigars.

I like your viewpoint. Very well put… I do like Laine more than Zegras though…

What does Trevor Zegras have to do with Shane Wright? lol shouldn't it be about Wright since people are arguing who is developing faster so there points are based on that, not if Bedard will be then next Crosby or the GOAT because he did that, at least that's how I saw it.

I am keeping them in my tradelist. He is still young, a lot of things can happen. I remember Toffoli YGs selling for 50$ right after its trade to Montreal.

I think TheVolta's point is the "cautionary tale" regarding prospecting. Zegras had a promising start, injuries led to inconsistency and now his future greatness is very much in doubt. Young players being seen as a sure thing investment in the hobby can change on a dime. Look at Jeremy Swayman for another example. There's actually too many to list. More become mediocre than become big stars. This has been thoroughly discussed before.

Zegras isn't the worse idea at his current prices, which will actually dip even lower this summer as prices will fall even more as collectors give up/move on. I personally think he's got some hockey ahead. Though it's not looking great for his cards to ever reach their peaks during the covid boom.
