I’ve been going through a bunch of old comics during the extended break and this Buffy “Got Milk?” back cover advertisement stuck out to me. So I thought about starting a thread to showcase cool back covers.
![]() I also got to thinking… are there examples of comic books that are collectible primarily for what is on the back cover? Last edited by finfangfan; 12-22-2024 at 09:13 AM. |

In terms of ads on back covers, I have a soft spot for a lot of the 80's ads on the backs of Marvel Comics especially. Most of them are pretty dumb, video games, candy, and such, but some would run for several months across the entire line, so you'd know them very well after seeing them on the backs of 25 comics a month.
Comics from the late 60's and 70's have some amazing ads for kid stuff from that era. I'm not quite as familiar with them, though, since I didn't get many of those issues until the 90's. It was also fun to look at that near constant advertisement with all the prizes you could earn by selling boxes of Christmas cards, but I never took the leap. The first Rocketeer appearance was given the back cover of the issue of Mike Grell's "Starslayer" comic in which it was printed. That one is often displayed backwards in the CCG holder, so the Dave Stevens cover shows (no disrespect to Grell, who is also a superb artist).

Wow, I just sent a Starslayer #2 in to CGC, hoping for a 9.8!

Lots of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and Nintendo advertisements on early 90's back covers.

Stumbled upon this one today… would have been funny if it was advertising gloves!

Fun to see famous trading card sets appear on old back cover ads. This one from Dark Horse Comics #9 (not to be confused with Dark Horse Comics Presents)…

My brother and I each got a box of the flat green army men figures. I think we waited like 6 months and then when the tiny box with a hundred figures finally came in the mail we were both incredibly disappointed. I haven’t trusted mankind since!

The back cover of Wolverine #1 (1988) is pretty cool:
![]() I have one that has been signed by Stan Lee and John Buscema on the back:

Going through some of my dad’s old Golden Age comics has been fun. Here’s a cool Rogues Gallery back cover by Chester Gould from an old Dick Tracy…
