Had Johnston on my radar as a young (21 years old) player that could take a major step up this season, but he has been lackluster at best and was brutal before his 5 game point streak from 11/20 - 12/1.
- In his rookie year, he had 24 goals and 17 assists on 15% shooting - In his second year he had 32 goals and 33 assists on 14.8% shooting - This year, 30% of the way through the season, he has 4 goals and 10 assists on 6.2% shooting while averaging more shots this season than his previous seasons. He is averaging 18.46 TOI vs 17:00 and 15:29 TOI the last two seasons. Admittingly, I have not watched too many Stars' games, is it bad luck, poor shot selection or something else?

There's a lot of players in this statistical lull. Law of averages says most of the established players seeing their declines will have better second halves, but for a younger player it's a slump that maybe they'll figure out (or the league has figured them out, or their linemates aren't a good match, they're playing through an undisclosed injury, etc).
He definitely looked good in the games i saw last year, have admittedly not watched much hockey outside of my couple favorite teams this year, and they've only played the Stars once each I think. I did not notice Wyatt being on the ice in either game. Like you, coming into this year Knies and Johnson were younger forwards I was keeping an eye on from a next step perspective. Knies has been okay thus far.

It doesn't explain his shooting percentage (which I hope will continue to get better), but you've got to remember that most of his first two seasons, Johnnie spent down the lineup with Benn. This season, he's played mostly on the "top" line with Hintz and Robo so he's playing against tougher matchups. Also, not only did Johnnie miss most of the preseason, Robo missed all preseason with foot surgery so he couldn't even skate. That line is just now starting to develop some chemistry. Keep an eye on Johnnie's stats over the next six weeks and I think you'll be very surprised. The kid's skill is great, but his hockey IQ is amazing.

6 straight games with a point is nice to see. Still want to see the goal total increase but he is trending up which is good.

Kid has the goods. May never be a MacKinnon type but can be the driver to a Cup winner. Like Brayden Point or Kopi.

Literally, a few games after this post is when he stopped shooting as much but started scoring a lot more!
