Default BUYER BEWARE: 2009-10 The Cup Mario Lemieux Crosby Tribute /10 Cards

I was made aware of a 2009-10 UpperDeck The Cup Mario Lemieux Sidney Crosby Tribute card serial numbered /10 this past weekend that is for sale on eBay.

That prompted me to determine that the jersey put into at least three of the Mario Lemieux Sidney Crosby Tribute Patch Auto cards from that set in addition to several Limited Logos /50 cards from that set were never worn “in an official NHL game” as the back of the cards maintains.

Here is the link to the research on my website. CAUTION: Picture heavy!

I have already informed the seller and I believe the listing should have been ended and re-listed with the accurate information regarding the patch; however, the seller indicated that he would notify bidders who have already bid and added additional details to the listing description.

Happy collecting!

Can the language possibly be interpreted that the jersey was worn in an official NHL game by a player other then Lemieux?

Sure. It just would never have been worn by a Pittsburgh Penguin, let alone Mario Lemieux.

Good work but this is typical for all manufacturers in the hobby and has been for awhile. The back simply states its a jersey used in an NHL game. It doesn't claim it was used by him in particular. It then states the autograph is from Super Mario. That's pretty much it. I believe Panini and their Flawless Basketball product is mostly game used for today's cards but the language is adjusted similar to this Upper Deck card if not.

The language is ambiguous to be sure, but it’s not simply that Mario Lemieux never wore that material with those sleeve numbers, the Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t. The Boston Bruins didn’t. I don’t know of one single team that would have ever worn this material and color with that color sleeve number.

Can you suggest one?

Could it be from an NHL Old-Timers game of some kind? Hall of Fame game?

This. UD (and probably Panini and Topps) gets jerseys from everywhere. I still remember the run of aqua patches for legends from like 2008-2010

If it is, neither scenario would constitute “an official NHL game”.
