Default Topps Finest X-Men ’97– Q1 2025

So this will be the First Topps Marvel set to be dropped in the US in years. And X-Men 97 is likely a good product for the card collecting demo.

Will be cool to see the card images soon…

https://www.fanaticsinc.com/press-re...-collaboration

Today, Topps announced a major expansion of their existing overall deal with Disney Consumer Products to include global Disney, Pixar and Marvel trading card rights. New Marvel collectible trading cards will hit retail and hobby shops in Q1 2025 with Topps Finest X-Men ’97, the first time Topps has developed and distributed physical Marvel trading cards globally. Topps will continue their global Star Wars collaboration.

I would be very interested if it’s using the ‘97 finest design, as I’m a huge fan of that set from baseball and its bronze/silver/gold and embossed refractors. That I would be interested in. If it’s just a regular modern Finest set that is using X-Men 97 characters with cut/paste art, then probably not.

This kind of feels like an odd set to start with. The show seems to be popular but it’s not MCU popular. I don’t see autos from the voice cast (assuming there are autos in the set) being in high demand. I would’ve expected Topps to want to make a big splash with their first Marvel set.

Counter argument: Topps knows there’s going to be a massive amount of Marvel product hitting the market as UD dumps whatever it has left in the pipeline. A smaller set like this, with lower expectations, may be the smart play until things calm down.

X-Men '97 is probably the most popular Marvel show/movie not named Deadpool 3 since Infinity War/End Game.

And X-Men is still on it's own level with the nostalgia of the cartoon that most of us grew up watching.

They'll bust out the razzle dazzle in hopes people forget about UD's terrible QA/QC Marvel products.

I'm looking forward to this, but I'm not looking forward to the hype cycle.

Looking for autos/relics of cartoon voice actors - one role as confirmed on IMDb is enough to qualify.

I had no idea it was so popular. I haven't watched but I've read some positive headlines. And some headlines about the creator/showrunner being fired and lawsuits. So maybe Topps is starting with a set it hopes will be popular. At the very least, it's tied to a recent and ongoing TV show.

Doesn’t matter what sets they put out. If they’re Chrome/Finest they will get pumped by every online retailer, breaker, and influencer. They will have bounties on certain cards in the products to drive the product prices up. Prepare to spend some $$ if you want to open any personal boxes.

If this is the future trajectory of marvel cards, sounds pretty bleak. Good for the investors and flippers or whatever…collectors majorly lose out. I have no interest in paying $750 for a Marvel Chrome box, for many reasons.

the new cartoon series, is absolutely fantastic. It pays homage to the original and has great story, pace and characterization imo.
Should watch it!

This offering & Topps Chrome/Sapphire will go a long way towards making most UD era cards worth more...so, in that regard, I love it

Yea from an art standpoint, it’ll look pretty generic, just using clipped art from the show….very meh for me.

But, if that Jean on the box is a sign of the rest of the set, I’m somewhat interested…as that is a 97 Finest Masters design….from the 97 Finest baseball set which I’m a big fan of. The question is will base look like that or is it just an insert set though. If they do a bronze/silver/gold type deal I’ll probably be drawn in. The box design itself also looks like a retro Finest design, from 96 Finest.

I like how they created comic book-style panels for the Wolverine card.

I think the look of these cards will come down to execution. The digital mock-ups don't really convey the physical elements like etching and refractors that were very important to 90s cards.

I think Topps Genesis is the better set from this press release and it hits first (online only though). Looks like this one will likely be a weekly release like the Topps Living stuff.

Quote:
First up, Topps Genesis will debut one of the first-ever card sets to spotlight characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm all in one collection! Keep your eyes peeled for cards featuring Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear, Spider Man, Darth Vader, and more! There’s no end to the magic Topps Genesis has in store for this collection, so don’t miss a moment. Fans can find the first drop of these cards available exclusively on Topps.com beginning early January.

Also… regarding the X-men set. I think it will do well. And it looks like Topps is trying to also get it into comic book shops as well so I doubt it will be $500 a box as speculated above.

You’ll find the Topps Finest X-Men ’97 collection in hobby and comic book shops nationwide in late January.
So that’s what I think is the biggest change from the move of Marvel from UD to Topps… Topps ability to get cards into more outlets which can expand the audience.

Ah really? Gotta disagree there, Genesis looks very generic.

Not saying it'll be $500 but I don't think it will make much of a difference if it is available in comic-book shops. It will just be one more place people try to get their bite out of the trading card pie with high prices. As cards have expanded to basically everywhere I haven't seen any impact price wise other than them going higher lol

The comic book shops that can't sell these just won't take allocation (my local LCS stopped doing it for Upper Deck Marvel for that reason). The ones that can aren't going to leave money on the table if LCS are selling at a universal price, availability may improve but it just becomes a constant cycle, new place gets allocation, decides to be fair as they are new to this, realize they are underpriced either by selling out immediately or checking prices and see people purchasing those as well, and boom they become same price as everywhere else moving forward.

Like the design of the Finest box, but at 1 parallel per box it tells me the print run is going to the moon.

Price is likely about $200 or a little over, if it's priced like star wars products.

Topps jumped the shark before they even fully received the license when they printed "autograph" cards that were not actual autos. Even the sticker-haters can recognize that a sticker is better than some "Scarlet Witch" printed on trash.

Don't want to be painted as a Fanatics shill or anything, but SW products have been trending down price wise. Chrome 24 was $99 with guaranteed auto (down from $149 previous year). Chrome Galaxy 24 was $199 with 4 guaranteed parallels (down from $219). And -- both 2024 products were no contest better than the 2023 offerings.

I'd be somewhat surprised if 97 Finest is priced more than $99/hobby on the Topps onsale.

$99 is fine and I would do a few cases. Just have a very bleak outlook on everything fanatics.

Sw chrome was great at $100
