Default Have you searched for a job in the past year? Share your experience.

Seems pretty rough out there right now. I thankfully have a job, but I’m looking to make a change by the end of the year. I’ve filled out 40ish applications and had 2 phone screens.

1 was a perfect fit, and they liked me, but the requirement was 2 weeks/month in-office in a city that’s over 2 hours away. If they had an office in the city near me, I’d be there right now instead of making this thread.

I’ve reached out to recruiters that work for the companies I’m applying to on LinkedIn and don’t hear a damn thing back. Not too sure what their role is supposed to be. I’ve emailed hiring managers directly (as the posting said to) and never hear back. It feels like there are a lot of job seekers and just a handful of applicable jobs that are in my metro area or even remote.

Job market is strong. No way would they lie about that.

What kind of work do you do? Is it the industry you are in? My buddy was thinking of taking a few months off to decompress. I told him I’d wait it out as he won’t know what the market looks like in half a year.

I've had 1 company after me for going on 3 years now, but I don't want to live in Miami. Pay is great, benefits are great, but the thought of living in Miami is not appealing to me at all.

Tech industry. There's been a lot of job cuts over the past 18 months, so I kinda get it. I would absolutely not take time off in between jobs right now, that sounds like suicide. I've made it tougher on myself by not having a degree (or even a diploma). Getting through the automated application systems without checking that box is almost impossible.

Yeah Miami is a different scene than SC.

Yeah tech jobs aren’t in a great spot right now. So that makes sense. I get why my buddy wants to step away. They laid off so many people at his company that he’s wearing so many hats for the company. He’s just being overworked and used. But I wouldn’t leave either in this current job market. Could get worse. Hopefully the country turns it around and we get back to where we were.

I got laid off at the end of April.

Applied for two jobs after taking two weeks to decompress. Got offered both jobs on the same day about 6 weeks after I got laid off. Accepted the one that was a better long term fit.

The job I accepted was from an indeed post. I had no contacts at the company and it was a leadership position. The other was with the company that laid me off, so I obviously had plenty of contacts and referrals, however it would have been a step back and more an opportunity to rebuild my previous department from the ground up.

I fully anticipated being off for a while because I was in the odd spot of being in a Director level of leadership, but for a shorter time. I was a bit surprised things happened as quickly as they did.

I haven’t looked for a job since 1999.

Thanks for sharing. That’s kind of the dream story.

I don’t mind that at all. But they don’t have an office nearby.

Thank you. Interview went very well. Should know something next week. Best thing is 10% employer automatic 401k. Which is gravy as I already max out.
