Default Who is your favorite astronaut?

Or cosmonaut or taikonaut or any other country.

Who is your favorite human to have gone to space?

I always liked Mark Kelly's science videos. He was always so down-to-earth even when he was in orbit.

Valentina Tereshkova is pretty bad-a$$. She went into space for Russia in 1963 back when NASA only allowed women to get coffee for the men in the program..

Don’t blame NASA if there weren’t any female engineers in the 1960s who were also military pilots. Women were in supporting roles like engineering not just secretaries and receptionists. There was a 2016 movie made about this (Hidden Figures).

Jim Lovett, I mean Tom Hanks.

Actually, I mean the guys in Houston who talked down Apollo 13.

Buzz Aldrin. I'm a fan of both his terrestrial and extraterrestrial work.

I went to Harrison Schmitt Elementary School in Silver City, New Mexico during the time Schmitt was also a U.S. Senator. He was good enough to visit the school which had only opened a few years prior to my attending there (for 2nd & 3rd Grade). I remember shaking his hand, but I was very young, and I don't really think I understood the magnitude of what he had done at that time. Certainly, if I was just a little older I would've asked for an autograph.

Harrison, known as "Jack" to his friends, is still hanging in there at age 89. As an Apollo 17 astronaut and scientist, he's the most recent living person, and only person without a background in military aviation, to have walked on the moon.

Harrison himself wasn't born in the small town of Silver City where the school was located, but rather the even smaller town right next to it that was named Santa Rita. I say "was", because that city is essentially gone having been excavated, with an enormous mining operation having swallowed the area where it was. As a result of the land he was born on essentially gone, Schmitt would refer to himself as having been born in the air, and thus, a fitting choice to go into space.
