Default Rather have an 8/9 or a 6/10?

So this thing I found on my feed yesterday and already lost track of posed a pretty interesting question.

For context:

"What happened? Not sure if we missed previous discussions on this but it seems the Jordan Game Jersey Auto that once held the record for the most expensive Jordan card ever sold has been regraded and gone from a Professional Sports Authenticator - PSA 8/9 Auto when it sold at Goldin in May 21 to a PSA 6/10 Auto as per the current PSA imagery.
Does anyone know the story behind this? Did we totally miss something here?"

"Looks like it was reslabbed and parts of the card near the jersey swatch peeled off.. probably got stuck on the PSA case. Ouch."

"This isn't a case of the owner trying to get a better grade. If it was regraded it would have a new cert number.
Owner most likely had the card reholdered and PSA damaged it during the process. Which I'm sure they're insured for that kind of stuff."

"when you submit for reslab, you're forced to sign your rights away. The waiver specifically says they are not liable for any damage. I went through this issue with PSA twice in the last year."

"They retraced the auto after snapping the card. Probably dinged the card during the snapping, lmao. Classic PSA sh-"

So the question is, all things being equal, rather have an 8/9 or a 6/10?

I would have preferred PSA 8 Auto AUTH. Who gives a crap about the auto grade.

The auto is what makes the card. Without an auto, the 1997 Jordan game used is $20,000. With the auto and the /23 numbering, that is apparently a $2.1M card.

What does this mean? Someone other than MJ traced over the signature?

IMO the difference between a 9 and a 10 auto is pretty minimal. Premium on 10 autos is overblown

That comment is what is known as high level trolling. It just points out how arbitrary auto grading is. Probably they initially dinged it for going over some lines, then realized that if you placed an auto where it should go on the card, you were gonna break a few eggs to get there.

What I would like to see is microscopic sigs that leave excess space get an automatic 7. And sigs that exuberantly go wherever get an automatic 10.

Nothing is worse than a smudged auto or an auto that runs off card. 10 auto always. On this card auto appears fine and is not lacking in eye appeal. Maybe bubbling?

bubbling is like patina. some collectors pay extra for that.

Absolutely. You really can't tell the difference between a 9 auto and a 10 auto most of the time anyway.

There goes that whole grade and slab to protect your cards angle.

PSA says they compensated the owner. How much should PSA reimburse the owner for that kind of damage on a $2.1M card? I think the card value went down by 1/2 at least.

I think PSA and collector will assume card is unique enough that value would not change by more than 20 percent, unless the original sale was manipulated. So I would put the settlement at probably under $125k. But what if this issue should replicate on other slabbed jerseys? Actually would put PSA out of business. It may be time to enter the "let the jersey breathe" era. Plastic encapsulation is not ideal for everything. And valuable jerseys are unique enough that they do not need to be encapsulated to be verified.

So the card got worse from PSA holder damage but the autograph somehow got better. Great job PSA. I mean, you just can't make this stuff up.
