My 13yo son and I finally talked the boss into letting us go last night. We booked our airfare and reserved a hotel. However, hotels are slim pickings at this point, and I want to make sure I don't make a mistake. We got the Wyndham Airport through the NSCC website, as it was close to the IX and has a shuttle.
Now I'm wondering if I want to stay a bit farther out and rent a car. Looking at the Hampton Inn in Elyria, but it's about a 30 min drive. There's also some in Independence, which doesn't look quite as far. I don't know the areas. Just looking to see where others are staying and some general hotel advice. Thanks in advance! |

I think the main consideration for car/no car should actually be whether you're buying wax at the show and need to take stuff back. Suitcases on the plane is painful and quite frankly, still doesn't allow you to buy much if wrapper redemptions are something you seriously want to do in quantity. Imagine taking even just one hobby case of topps chrome and series 2 back in a plane suitcase for example. Now imagine if you're like me and redeem a dozen cases. Can't do it without a car or living locally.
I'm staying about 15min drive out this time including for other reasons such as it's cheaper, more food/gas etc choices because it's basically suburbia at that point, and my now years of experience tell me that I don't have the energy to start from 30-min early access to shutting the place down plus trade nights every day for five days. I'm only at the show maybe 2/3 the time it's open, I don't do any trade nights anymore, and even then every part of my lower body is sore by the end from the standing/walking/constant hustle of the floor. I'm in my 30s and fairly in shape. Don't know how other people have the stamina quite frankly.

We always book a Vrbo for the National. Way better than a hotel, and cheaper usually as well. Plus you get the privacy of a house in a residential area and the space as well.
That said, I stayed at a hotel in Independence for the Strongsville show one year and it was great. It was an Extended Stay America, and for like $100 a night, we got a large suite, big enough for the whole family. |

I got the Hampton Inn in Independence. Thanks for the confirmation. I was checking the latest reviews for the airport Wyndham, and they were all 1-star. "Horrible" "Dirty" "Elevator doesn't work". I feel better with the Hampton.

Staying at the Wyndham in Avon which is about 10 miles away. So I will probably be away from all of the trade night festivities unless I drive to the hotels.

I also am driving since it's only a an 8 hour drive from nj and it's easier 12 in tolls and easier to transport stuff home.

Nice. You will have fun. While we have a Vrbo in the suburbs, we plan on taking a few days to spend downtown. We have tickets to the Guardians game on Wednesday night and will probably spend a day or two up by the lake at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and all there is to do around there.

Driving (8 hours) and got a VRBO lined up about an hour away.
I plan to hit up the Waffle House and Wally Waffle to see which is better. I've been on southern road trips before so I know Wally Waffle has a tall order ahead of them.
