Default Rust on a vehicle

I am a car guy and currently have a truck on bring a trailer. For those non car loving folks Bring a Trailer, aka BaT, is like Ebay on steroids for car lovers. They have high end and unique auctions . Anyway the subject of rust has come up and I am very surprised at what amount of rust concerns people. unless you live in Nevada or arizona every car will have a minor amount of rust. Surface rust is not the same as rust eating thru panels. This is a 28 year old truck with 160K miles we are talking about not a 2025 Bugatti that has never been rained on. I dont know I guess I am crazy. In my state (Tennessee) if you go to a dealer and look at any 10 year old vehicle 100% will have "rust".

Bondo is good for the heart and soul and is the miracle cure that solves all automotive body problems. #ZeroRust

I'm thinking a 28 yr old truck w/ 160k miles isn't a good candidate for bondo, since nobody cares what it looks like anymore. It's a work truck now.

There are other places rust could be a concern though. Structural rust (frame, underbody, etc) could be a dealbreaker but dang, if it is then you better buy something newer.

I live in Miami, where rust gets weird due to humidity. On my car, the heat shield over where the exhaust manifold joins into the pipe rusted and the shield started making a clicking noise when it vibrated. I thought I had a major problem with the knock until I looked and saw it was just flapping around.

Pita big time but cheap fix.

Whistlin' Diesel didn't raise no punk.

Opie: it's BaT. Know your environment. You're talking about the Sothebys of Carvana. If you're keen on body rot on foxbodies and post-war farm trucks, stick to craigslist and autotrader.

Bat's typically geared towards the upper 90th percentile vehicles in terms of mileage and condition. Actually considering using them on my search for an f82 m4. Though it does seem like majority of the listings these days are coming from wholesale dealers and not private parties.
