Default What would you do? (Bowman red question)

Hey guys,
I thought I’d try my hand in grading cards with PSA. I bought a Bowman red refractor #/5, 1st edition card on eBay of a major hot top prospect. I sent it into PSA thinking it would grade a PSA 9. Unfortunately it came back really low as a PSA 6 or 7 (I have to triple check it). My question is due to the low grade on a modern card should I sell it on eBay and try to recoup my money or should I crack it out of the case and sell it raw? (Card looks nicer than 6-7 and maybe someone else would have a better chance at regrading it (I have no interest in resending it in myself) as it appears I’m not very good at grading cards lol. Your thoughts? Thanks

Ethically if you did this, would you note it previously graded a 6 or 7?

Many here will say that, if you crack and sell raw, you have a duty to disclose the prior grade

Any time you sell raw you need to disclose the issues with the card. Regardless of whether it was previously graded or not. If it got a 6, that means it has a large ding, dent, or crease in the card. You need to make the buyer aware of that. On top of just being ethical, it will save you hassle on a possible return and/or negative feedback.

Crack it out and sell it raw. State in the description that it graded...whatever it graded...and watch it sell for more than it should. PSA-6 or PSA-7 grade will hurt the value more than it being raw with a completely honest and transparent description.

I did this once as an experiment. I bought a PSA-8 of a card I already owned and intended to grade (I owned several copies, actually). I cracked it out to find out why it got an 8. I then listed it raw, stated why it got an 8, and showed a photo of why I thought it got an 8. I auctioned a PSA-9 at the same time. The raw former 8 sold for more than the 9!

Good luck.

I would send it back to topps if it got below a 7 - if it is a new release since that is what they guarantee but not sure they replace cards that were bought on the secondary - also how do you not know what grade it got...?

Because it was in an order with other slabs so I didn’t memorize the grade. I just remember it was not a 9 or 10. I’ll have to take another look at it.

Now that I’m thinking about, I might just resend it in because with PSA you could send it in 10 times and get 10 different grades.

Not if it has a crease or some significant damage. If it got a 6 it’s for a reason.

Definitely not crease, I believe print lines because a lot of new submitters don't know this flaw.

What do you mean? Are talking about in general? A card can definitely get a 6 for a crease. Are you talking about the specific card? You’ve seen it? Print lines won’t get you a 6.

6 tends to be a bent corner, specifically, unless the surface is just wrecked.

First edition is notorious for badly dinged corners. I think it was 2021 and 2022 where a majority of the foils had dinged corners due to where they sat in the packs

Something is fishy. You can't remember the grade so instead of double checking the grade, you take even more time and effort to post here?

I'd be curious as to cracking and disclosing the flaw while selling raw would do as good or better than in the slab. My gut says it would but then the risk of a stupid buyer attempting a return because it's not a potential 9.

It's a cycle. Guy you bought it from probably bought it to grade. It got a 6 or 7 so he/she cracked it and sold it raw. Next person who buys it will do the same. Pretty soon that card will be graded more then the print run.

Yes, or you can submit it to psa again and get a psa 9!

Especially after you've sent it to a card doctor for work.
