Default New G1 Transformers trading cards to celebrate 40th anniversary

Spotted these among other new TF items being released this year in celebration of the 40th anniversary. From a company called Dynamite but I'm not too familiar with them.

Dynamite is a solid company. They have a wide variety of comic titles from Red Sonja to Vampirella to The Boys to the upcoming relaunch of Thundercats.

Not that there's a lot of info in that one pic, but it looks pretty basic. Could be a return to the original card sets where there aren't a ton of parallels, manufactured hits, or huge print runs. In other words, something I'd be interested in!

Lots of stuff coming! Here's the blurb about the cards:

Dynamite Entertainment – Collect a new set of nearly 200 premium trading cards featuring fan-favorite characters from the TRANSFORMERS brand’s “Generation 1” era, showcasing classic art styles from an international array of top artists and Hasbro’s design archives. More information and product previews will be shared in the future.

Still not much info. Mentioning the "international array of top artists" makes me wonder if this will be mostly original art, which would be awesome! The earliest Transformers sets were screenshots of the cartoon or existing box art.

Dynamite's card site:

Their sets usually include artist autos and/or sketch cards, along with other inserts like foil cards.

I was hoping the prices wouldn't be killer

Transformers is sorely in need of a proper modern trading card set. The 2018 TCG set had pretty nice looking cards, but they were jumbo sized.

I would agree, but I personally prefer G1 only because that's what I grew up with, and have zero interest in anything related to any of the live action films. Not a single one of those that I liked.

That means this set is right up my alley. Now all I need is an updated GI Joe, some Thundercats, He-Man, M.A.S.K., and a handful more.

Speaking of 80s nostalgia, they have a Boglins set:

Dynamite card boxes are priced pretty reasonably compared to other nonsports. Their boxes are around $100 and include 1 sketch and bunch of other inserts.

Compare that to Upper Deck where it's $400/box and no guaranteed sketch.

A proper release for the G1 characters with nice artwork would have me excited.

I got excited watching Bubblebee in a movie theater because the opening scene showed the G1 characters fighting a battle in Cybertron -- it was glorious. My little sister enjoyed the film -- it's too bad the other films are the Michael Bay versions.

The Michael Bay movies made a ton of money, even the Rise of the Beasts, which was considered a flop by Transformers standards, made 439 million on a 200 million budget (granted Bay was only a producer, not the director). The 5 movies Bay directed made over 4 billion dollars. I don't really get it myself, as those movies were shot dark, most of the battle scenes it was hard to make out what was happening, the writing was terrible, and there was basically no storyline to speak of.

Bumblebee made 468 million on a 135 million budget. Maybe that will encourage them to make a Gen 1 Transformers movie. Probably more likely we'll get a GI Joe Vs. Transformers sequel to Rise of the Beasts though. I did like the 90s vehicle designs in Rise of the Beasts. And it was nice seeing the Beast Wars characters, since I liked that cartoon, but they really needed a stand alone Beast Wars film to get into the whole history of the characters.

I sure hope Dynamite did some market research while planning this set because it seems like overkill to have two versions coming out with both blaster boxes and hanger boxes. The base cards in the blaster boxes are printed on vintage cardstock.

I'm confused about the 40 One-of-One Unique Single Print cards that are apparently spread across the regular and deluxe versions. It sounds like they're not sketch cards but actual, printed 1/1 cards, which means there's literally no chance someone can collect them all.

The Deluxe Ultra-Premium boxes seem like the way to go with two guaranteed sketch cards and a guaranteed signed card.

No matter the configuration, it's weird that the "Deluxe Ultra-Premium" boxes are cheaper.

That looks like something I could see popping up at a convention next week.

If SDCC, would be odd as Dynamite doesn't have a booth.

Dynamite is also running this through Kickstarter. I have been keeping this set in the back of my head, intending to order closer to release. They have an exclusive binder through the KS

If you back the Kickstarter, you can get 5x7 sketches as an add-on for $75 each, limit 10

Yeah, I got two of the 5x7s in addition to some other things. I really wish that showed off more examples, but sometimes you gotta take a chance. Even better if I could pick the characters!

I don't think the binder is a KS exclusive...

For example, the metal cards mention it explicitly:

"Everyone loves an exclusive! Available only on this Kickstarter is a set of FOUR Transformers 40th Anniversary Trading cards printed on REAL METAL! You get 2 AUTOBOTS and 2 DECEPTICONS in this set. Each metal trading card is something super rare and fun to add to your Transformers Trading Cards collection!"

Also, from the comments section on KS:

"If you back the 5" x 7" sketch card, can you pick the character for the sketch?

Dynamite EntertainmentCreator 3 days ago - Yes, we'll communicate with you at the close of the campaign to secure the details. Final character choices and art will be pending Hasbro review and approval."

So this is great news! I got a couple of the sketches before knowing this, so it was a welcome surprise.
