Default Dear Blowout Forums: What would you do?

1. You come across a must-have one of a kind card

2. The seller has no feedback and it's obvious they only joined eBay to sell this card

Do you pass altogether? If you take a chance, what extra measures can/would you impose?

Buyers are generally well protected, but would you take a flyer on trying to land a unique item under these circumstances?

100%. Buyers are overly protected on eBay, and everyone who sells there had to start somewhere. If you’re worried about potential shipping issues due to a lack of knowledge, I wouldn’t hesitate to message the seller and ask about certain shipping conditions.

I'll typically give it a shot. I guess it depends on the $$ amount a little bit but I've usually had good experiences here.

One time I gave it a shot and it turned out ok even though there some minor issues.

It was worth the trouble.

Another time, it was a disaster. The seller took advantage of a free loan.

As long as there is no doubt it's not fake. I'd buy it and not think twice.

If it is a card you’ve really been looking for, go for it. eBay will protect you.

Under $100, I'd take a shot, but over $100 I would pass even if eBay favor sellers in most cases. Not worth losing money on someone who may be a eBay savvy scammer.

I would go for it.

Years ago I ponied up a couple hundred dollars to buy a card from a set I was building, and it was a brand new zero feedback seller. I didn't look closely at the username--I thought it was something about golf? (the card was an NFL football card).

Shipping was a little slow getting out, and I looked at the username again. It was literally "gofkurslf". Once I figured out the user name, I realized I was probably going to have a problem. But surprise surprise, the card arrived and it was in good shape!

Sometimes things work out even where there are red flags. And if things don't work out, you're probably going to be protected anyway.

eBay feedback is definitely overrated compared to BO feedback.

It would have to be over four figures before I'd pull the plug. Have had this happen a couple of times with high-end 1/1 Triple Threads cards. First time, bought a 1/1 Laundry Tag auto for ~$300 from a 2 feedback guy. Quick payment, ship, everything perfect. Second time, same type of card, sampe price this time a logoman, guy gave me the runaround, said he couldn't get the money from eBay because of some problem with his account, would I cancel, he needed to sell through his friend whose account was fine, etc. I saw no path forward with this dummy so I just cancelled, bid on the second auction, it was shilled past my max bid and I saw it in someone else's high-end IG collection recently.

Even though the second time was a jumbo box of stupidity, I would do it again to get the key card I wanted.

Op. I don't think you know what "must-have" means.

Touché. We are talking about sportscards after all! Let me downgrade it to would-really-love-to-have. It is a four figure card. Zero question it's authentic, but AG does not apply since it would be a cross-border transaction.

Have to really mull it over. Thanks for the feedback, All.

Uh, no. They screw buyers via authentication. Once a card gets authenticated, regardless of whether its damaged, altered or fake, it's final sale.

The buyer has to do a charge back to get their money back, because eBay isn't in the business of losing money.

This is how stupid eBay sellers are who complain about buyers getting preferential treatment on eBay. Once a card passes through AG, regardless of whether it's damaged, altered or fake, they can tell the buyer to suck their balls.

eBay caters to sellers now because they are trying to prevent sellers from leaving the platform.

eBay is no longer a safe place for buyers. I've been hearing from other people who have recently gotten scammed on ScamBay. Whether it's shill bidding, items not as described, or AG damaging cards, eBay is all about sticking it to buyers.
