There are only 2 PSA 10 Gretzkys in the pop count and the last one sold for 3,750,000. Granted OPC is a rough cut and those 2 were probably cut from an uncut sheet. I'd think the roll of a dice at the chance of atleast 1 10 and several 9s would bump this up to 4mill. I also wouldn't be surprised if it went for something ridiculously higher.

The PSA 10s were not sheet cut, and rough factory edges don't impact the grading scale.

Kinda sucks the only place to really authenticate this has lost all credibility and while it's understandable why they went with them it doesn't give much assurance and just leads to suspicion and GI Joe jokes

Lose all credibility? No, it didn't. Lose some, absolutely. But that's why they don't wrap sealed cases anymore. BBCE made a mistake and adjusted it's services so as to not make it again. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but they open all cases now.

BBCE now opens the case and inspects the boxes. One of my case was opened and authenticated by them that way.

Correct. I'm going to have Steve do a case for me soon and he explained they will open it, inspect it, reassemble then reseal it with a specially made tape they have created for this before wrapping it. Just for anyone who didn't know the specifics

That's my bad, didn't know they opened cases now original post said "sealed" so I just assumed it wasn't. In that case they retain some credibility although this is basically admitting they had to change their way of authentication because otherwise they "lost all credibility".

Correct, they do open all cases now and there is a video of him opening this case to verify the boxes were legit.

BBCE took a hit from the GI Joe fiasco, but they are still the "go to" in unopened certification.

Why would anyone think they are remotely decently centered?

This....the chances of pulling a card that would grade higher than a "7" are fairly slim.....not impossible, but not likely.

True but in theory everything but the centering should be solid. That puts a higher floor under the grade (probably a lot of 6-7s). PSA is not gonna hand out 8+ unless it is well deserved.

Hard to fathom this find. I suspect the final bid will be above $5M, but something so rare and unique is hard to place a value upon. Will the buyer keep it as is, or tempted to open some of the boxes to pull a few Gretzky cards and assess the condition?

Should they open boxes, and pull some high grade cards, how will this affect the overall value of the $3.75M card? With new competitors, the value likely drops, perhaps significantly, and this causal effect would need to be considered by the buyer should they opt to open the boxes.

Good problem to have, I suppose. Better still, having the dough to snag this case.

I remember at the beginning of the sports card boom and pack of Gretzky rookie cards were 20 bucks (about the inflationary equivalent of close to 50 today) at the time that sounded insane but that's nothing compared to what they go for now.

Of course I wouldn't touch a pack from nearly any source unless I saw a box from a case like this being opened.

This industry has way too many grifters to pay the pack prices these days.

Thats the problem with human grading anyway. Just crack and resubmit until someone at PSA is having a great day. Give me RAW all day everyday.

Could have swore I heard on a podcast from a popular hockey guru lots of these cases exist? I could be mistaken and he said boxes not cases, but I believe it was cases?

The guy who runs the podcast asked why these people are/were hanging onto them and he answered, if you don't need the money, you don't need the money.

Anyone else remember this episode? Likely around a year ago or so, maybe longer?

This Cases value far exceeds its break up value - its rarity is the Collectible
